24th Ranked Aggies down Wichita State, 9-1, to win Aggie Classic
Feb 14, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 24 Texas A&M softball team closed the opening weekend with a 9-1 victory over Wichita State to win the Aggie Classic on Sunday. With the win, the Aggies move to 4-1 on the season.
"I am pleased with how we played this weekend," head coach Jo Evans said. "I think there are some things that we could do a little bit better, but I think every coach always feels like that. I loved our fight. I thought our pitchers did a really nice job. We have a very inexperienced pitching staff for the most part, and for them to come out and take charge of games, it gave us a chance to win every single game. I am really pleased with that. We played every game with enthusiasm and as a team, so finishing this one off with a run rule makes it that much better. All in all, it was a good weekend and a good start for us."
The Shockers got on the board early with an RBI single in the top of the first, but A&M quickly responded with a solo home run by sophomore Tori Vidales in the bottom half of the frame.
With runners at the corners in the bottom of the second, junior catcher Celena Massey hit a two-run double into center field to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead.
Vidales hit her second home run of the game to begin the bottom of the third, before freshman Keeli Milligan hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to 5-1. Freshman Riley Sartain gave A&M a 6-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, plating Vidales.
The Aggies then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game. Sophomore Kristen Cuyos led off the inning with a single before Massey was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Junior April Ryan drove in her first run of the season with a pinch-hit single to center to give A&M a six run lead.
Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink loaded the bases with a single up the middle, before Vidales drew a four pitch walk to score Massey. Senior Cali Lanphear ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. Freshman Samantha Show earned her second victory of the season in the circle, throwing a six-hitter with four strikeouts.
The Aggies return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT against Sam Houston State at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Live streaming of the game can be seen live on SEC Network+/Watch ESPN and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM.
