No. 23 Texas A&M sweeps No. 10 Arizona, New Mexico at Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 23 Texas A&M softball upset No. 10 Arizona, 8-4, before rallying against New Mexico to win 8-7 Sunday at the Mary Nutter Classic. The Aggies (11-1) finished the tournament as the only undefeated team, going 6-0.
"I really loved the way we came out against Arizona," head coach Jo Evans said. "I thought Samantha Show had her best start of the year, a complete game. She was in control the whole game and didn't get rattled, throwing strikes when she needed to. Her offensive performance was pretty special, getting four RBIs for herself with a couple of home runs. I loved the way we played that game. I thought we were tough outs.
"In the second game, Katie Marks had a great first inning and then we score three runs. You start thinking we can cruise and get this thing done, but instead we put our backs up against the wall giving up four unearned runs. To see our kids fight, it took a complete team effort to get that win. To kids coming off the bench to hit and to run, they all played hard in a tough situation. I am proud of the way our kids handled that."
Arizona took an early 1-0 in the top of the first, but A&M answered quickly as sophomore Tori Vidales scored freshman Keeli Milligan on an RBI single to right field. The Aggies scored two in the top of the second on a sophomore Kristen Cuyos home run and four in the top of the third. Freshman Riley Sartain singled to right, scoring senior Cali Lanphear, before freshman Samantha Show belted a three-run home run to right, giving the Aggies a 7-1 advantage.
Arizona then scored a run in third and fourth inning, before Show homered again for the eighth run of the game. Show earned the victory in the circle, hurling seven innings and striking out six.
Against New Mexico, A&M scored three runs in the bottom of the first on a sophomore Ashley Walters two-RBI double and a sophomore April Ryan RBI single to right center. The Lobos then scored seven unanswered with four in the top of the second and three in the top of the fourth.
A&M rallied in the seventh, scoring five run for the comeback victory. Sartain homered to left to begin the inning, before Cuyos tripled to center. Hailey Rebar singled to score pinch runner, senior Alex Masek, before Milligan singled to score pinch runner Erin Houthoofd. Vidales singled up the middle, scoring Milligan to tie the game at seven. Walters struck out on a dropped third strike, which allowed freshman Kaitlyn Alderink to score the winning run.
Show recorded her seventh victory of the season, throwing three and third innings in relief, striking out four.
The Aggies return to action Wednesday at Houston at 6 p.m. CT. The weekend can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM, and live scoring can be found at http://www.sidearmstats.com/tamu/softball.
