Seven home runs power No. 14 Texas A&M past UTEP, Indiana
Feb 27, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 14 Texas A&M softball team hit seven home runs and scored 17 times Saturday, defeating UTEP, 13-0, in five innings before knocking off Indiana, 4-2, at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Sophomore Kristen Cuyos and senior Cali Lanphear each hit two home runs, while freshmen Kaitlyn Alderink, Riley Sartain and Samantha Show each had one.
"I thought our pitchers did a great job today," head coach Jo Evans said. "It was great to see Trinity (Harrington) back on the mound and give us some quality innings. I thought Katie (Marks) was very comfortable on the mound. It isn't easy to throw against a team twice and when they see her that many times, I really thought Samantha (Show) kept her composure. We continued to hit throughout our lineup. We have lots of weapons. We were able to hit the long ball, but we also took our walks today and setting the table for those hitters. I love the way we are competing. I am always happy when we play good defense. Making the plays we are defensively is the reason why we have the chance to win games right now."
The Aggies (16-1) jumped all over the Miners in the first game of the day, scoring 11 runs in the first two frames. After A&M drew three walks to begin the first inning, Lanphear hit her third career grand slam before Show hit a two-run shot to left field, her fifth of the season.
In the second inning, Alderink hit her first career home run to right field to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead. After a sophomore Tori Vidales single, sophomore Ashley Walters and Show walked to load the bases for Cuyos, who hit a grand slam to left field.
Lanphear added two more runs for A&M with her fifth home run of the season, scoring Vidales, who reached on an error. Sophomore Trinity Harrington earned her fourth win of the season tossing three innings, giving up one hit and striking out four. Senior Katie Marks threw two innings of relief, striking out one.
Against the Hoosiers, Sartain gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second, hitting a home run off the top of the center field wall, plating Cuyos. A&M doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth following Cuyos' team-leading sixth home run and an Alderink RBI double, scoring freshman Keeli Milligan.
Indiana scored two runs in the top of the sixth, the first runs Texas A&M's pitching staff has allowed in 31 innings. Show earned her nation-leading 10th win of the season throwing a complete game, giving up three hits while striking out three.
The Aggies will close out the Texas A&M Invitational Sunday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 12:15 p.m. CT.
Live streaming of Sunday's game can be seen live on the SEC Network +, available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM.
