COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 16th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team puts its undefeated home record on the line this weekend as the Aggies open their Southeastern Conference home slate against No. 28 Mississippi State and No. 27 Ole Miss at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies face the Bulldogs Friday at 2:30 p.m., and first serve against the Rebels is Sunday at 12 p.m.
"Mississippi State and Ole Miss are both very fine teams, and we expect both of the matches to come with some challenges and difficulties," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "Both matches against them last year came down to the wire, so we definitely know what level of competition both programs will be bringing to town. Mississippi State is coming off of a very close match to No. 3 Georgia, so they are obviously playing at a very high level. They have seven players in the national rankings, three of them in singles and also all three doubles teams are ranked."
Texas A&M (9-4, 1-1 SEC), which opened SEC play on the road last weekend by falling to No. 29 Auburn, 4-2, and defeating No. 38 Alabama, 4-1, is 6-0 in home matches this season. In addition, the Aggies are a combined 8-0 against Mississippi State and Ole Miss since joining the SEC.
All-American Saska Gavrilovska is the Aggies' top-ranked singles player at No. 40. The junior from Serbia is 12-4 overall, including 3-1 at the No. 1 line. Freshman Domenica Gonzalez and senior Ines Deheza both are riding a team-high six-match win streak, and Gonzalez and junior Rutuja Bhosale are tied for most wins in dual matches with seven apiece.
Junior Rachel Pierson and sophomore Eva Paalma returned to the doubles rankings this week, jumping in at a team-high No. 41 following their 6-3 victory over Alabama's then-20th-ranked duo of Andie Daniell and Erin Routliffe on Sunday. It marked the highest ranked victory by an A&M doubles team in 2015-16.
Bhosale and senior partner Anna Mamalat are No. 56 in the ITA doubles rankings and lead the Aggies with a 14-4 overall mark, including a 6-2 record in dual matches only.
Mississippi State opened SEC play by defeating Tennessee, 6-1, to stretch its win streak to seven before suffering a hard-fought 5-2 loss to then-No. 7 Georgia on Sunday in Starkville, Mississippi. It was the Bulldogs' first home loss of the season after opening 5-0.
Jasmine Lee is No. 9 in the most recent ITA single rankings with an 8-2 record, all at the No. 1 line. Anastasia Rentouli is 51st with a perfect 10-0 dual match record, including 2-0 in SEC matches, and Georgiana Patrasc is No. 86 with a 10-1 dual match ledger.
The Bulldogs have won the doubles point in each of their last eight matches and in 11 of 12 matches overall. They are led by Patrasc and Madison Harrison, who are a team-high No. 34 in the most recent doubles rankings. Lee and Louise Ronaldson are No. 43 with a 7-0 dual match record, and Jennifer Brown and Kristin Vozniak are No. 70 with an 8-3 record.
Ole Miss is 8-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play entering a Friday match against No. 15 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Rebels' only loss was a 4-0 setback against then-No. 7 Georgia in the SEC opener.
Ole Miss has five players listed in the national singles rankings. Sophomore Arianne Hartono is a team-high No. 49 and enters the weekend 6-1 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 line. Hartono and El Kamash are No. 27 in the national doubles rankings with an 8-5 overall record, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches only.
Texas A&M defeated Mississippi State, 5-2, last year in Starkville to take a 5-0 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1989. The Aggies are 5-1 in the all-time series against Ole Miss, including a 4-2 victory against the then-No. 21 Rebels last season in Oxford, Mississippi.
