Early offense leads No. 10 Texas A&M over Texas Tech, 9-5

COLLEGE STATION – The No. 10 Texas A&M softball team scored seven runs in the first two innings to defeat Texas Tech, 9-5, Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
"I thought we did a nice job of not giving up our lead," head coach Jo Evans said. "We got six runs in the first and tacked on another one in the second, but Texas Tech did a nice job of hammering back and staying in their at bats. They saw a lot of pitches. Samantha Show fought hard out there and really gave us a chance to win. We needed both of those runs in the sixth inning, because they were getting after us. For us to go out there and give us a four-run lead in the seventh and never allow them to get the tying run at the plate was huge."
The Aggies (21-2) scored six runs in the first with home runs from sophomore Kristen Cuyos and freshman Samantha Show. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink reached base after being hit by a pitch before sophomore Tori Vidales singled. Senior Cali Lanphear reached on an error, allowing Alderink to score.
Cuyos then blasted her SEC-leading ninth home run to give A&M a 4-0 lead. After a senior Breanna Dozier single to left, Show sent one over the left field wall, her sixth of the season, to cap off the inning.
In the top of the second, freshman Keeli Milligan reached on an error and stole her nation's best 27th base. Vidales plated Milligan on a single to right field, giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead.
The Red Raiders (10-13) responded with two runs in the third and three in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5, but the Aggies scored two in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal. Show led off the inning with a single to center and was pinch ran for by senior Alex Masek, who scored on an Alderink single. After a Vidales single, Lanphear drove in Alderink with a single up the middle.
Show earned her 12th win of the season, striking out nine in five innings, while senior Katie Marks earned her first save of the season, tossing two innings of relief only giving up one hit.
The Aggies and Red Raiders return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.
All games this weekend can be seen on the SEC Network +, available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
