No. 10 Aggies hold off Texas Tech, 7-6
Mar 12, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION – No. 10 Texas A&M softball held off a feverish rally from Texas Tech to win, 7-6, Saturday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Aggies (22-2) scored all seven runs in the first inning, while the Red Raiders (10-14) scored four in the fourth and two in the fifth while loading the bases in the sixth and putting the tying run in scoring position in the seventh.
"It is always nice to come away with a win," head coach Jo Evans said. "I thought Texas Tech really fought hard and gave us a really good game. Our kids went out there and scored runs in the first inning with Dozier hitting that grand slam. We put a lot of hits together and we needed every one of those. I thought Samantha Show came out and took care of business in the sixth and seventh where she really got some big strikeouts for us."
Freshman Keeli Milligan began the inning with a hit by pitch, while sophomore Tori Vidales and senior Cali Lanphear drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Sophomore Ashley Walters drove in Milligan on an RBI single left, before sophomore Kristen Cuyos walked on four pitches.
Senior Breanna Dozier cleared the bases with her third grand slam of the season to give the Aggies a 6-0 lead. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink plated freshman Samantha Show, who reached on a walk, with a single to right.
Texas Tech began its rally in the fourth with a two-run homer from Kierra Miles and a two-RBI double from Ashley Fultz. After scoring two runs in the fifth, the Red Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on a pair of defensive miscues, but Show thwarted the attempt with a strikeout and a fly out.
Show struck out the leadoff hitter in the seventh before issuing a walk to Susan Welborn, who was pinch ran for by Camaury Washington. Washington moved into scoring position with a stolen base, but Show closed out the game with a strikeout and fly out to center for her 13th win of the season. The East Bernard, Texas native gave up six hits in seven innings while striking out seven.
The Aggies will go for the sweep against the Red Raiders Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT.
Sunday's tilt can be seen on the SEC Network +, available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
