COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 17th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team returns home to play host to Southeastern Conference foes Missouri and Arkansas this weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, where the Aggies are 8-0 this season.
Texas A&M, 11-6 overall and 3-3 in SEC matches only, takes on No. 59 Missouri (13-5, 1-4 SEC) on Friday at 5 p.m. The Aggies return to the courts on Easter Sunday to face 26th-ranked Arkansas, which is 14-6 overall and 3-2 in SEC play entering a Friday contest at LSU. The start time of the match against the Razorbacks has been moved up an hour to 11 a.m.
"It is nice to be back on our home courts to take on a much improved Missouri team," A&M coach Mark Weaver said. "We have actually played them the last four years in Columbia dating all the way back to our Big 12 Conference days, so it is nice to play them here for a change. We have had a solid week of practice despite some tough windy conditions, and I feel that the girls will be ready to go come tomorrow evening. We have played some very good tennis this year here at the Mitchell Tennis Center, and I very confident that we can continue to play at that high level."
The Aggies are looking to get back into the win column after suffering back-to-back losses for the second time this season and the first time since opening SEC play. A&M suffered a 6-1 loss at No. 7 Vanderbilt last week and ended its two-match road swing with a 6-1 setback at No. 26 Kentucky.
A&M junior Saska Gavrilovska is a team-high No. 32 in the ITA national singles rankings released earlier this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Aggies also have a pair of doubles teams ranked: No. 42 Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson and No. 44 Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat.
Freshman Domenica Gonzalez leads the Aggies in singles victories with a 15-8 overall record and a 9-4 worksheet in dual matches only. Senior Ines Deheza boasts the most wins in SEC play with a 4-2 record.
Bhosale and Mamalat are a team-best 16-5 overall in doubles, including 8-3 in dual matches only and 2-1 in SEC matches.
Missouri has already posted the most wins in a season since 2005 when the Tigers won 15 matches.
They enter the A&M match coming off their first SEC victory of the year, having defeated then-No. 43 Alabama, 4-3, on Sunday in Columbia, Missouri. Sophomore Clare Raley clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Aryn Greene at the No. 6 line in the last match standing.
Missouri junior Beatriz Machado Santos is ranked 72nd in singles with an 11-4 record at the No. 1 line, including a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) win against reigning SEC player of the Year Brooke Austin of Florida on March 5. Machado Santos is No. 73 in doubles with partner Brianna Lashway.
A&M is 22-1 all-time against Missouri since the teams first met in 1980, including 9-0 in matches played in College Station. Last year, the Aggies won their 14th consecutive match against the Tigers with a 7-0 victory in Columbia. The match also marked A&M's fourth consecutive shutout against Missouri.
Arkansas, whose No. 26 ranking is the highest since a No. 24 showing on Jan. 24, 2012, is riding an eight-match win streak heading into the Razorbacks' match at LSU. The Razorbacks defeated both Alabama and 15th-ranked Auburn last weekend in Fayetteville and then swept a midweek quadruple-header at Jackson State on Wednesday.
Arkansas freshman Ana Oparenovic is the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week and this week is making her first appearance in the ITA singles rankings, coming in at team-high No. 83. Yuliya Lysa is No. 88 in the national singles rankings.
A&M owns an 11-6 lead in the all-time series against Arkansas, including a 7-0 record in matches played in College Station, as well as a 3-0 mark since joining the SEC. Last year, the Aggies defeated Arkansas, 5-2, in Fayetteville.
