A&M Remains Undefeated at Home with 7-0 Shutout over Missouri
Mar 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 17th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team improved to 9-0 in home matches following a commanding 7-0 victory over 59th-ranked Missouri today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
A&M won the first two doubles matches to be completed and won all six singles matches in straight sets to improve to 12-6 overall, including 4-3 in Southeastern Conference matches. Missouri, which has already posted its most wins in a season since 2005 when the Tigers won 15, drops to 13-6 overall and 1-5 in SEC play.
It was A&M's 15th consecutive victory against its former Big 12 Conference foe, as well as the Aggies' fifth straight shutout against the Tigers, who drop to 0-10 all-time in matches played in College Station and 1-23 in the all-time series.
Doubles began with A&M's 42nd-ranked Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson jumping out to an insurmountable 4-0 lead against Missouri's 73rd-ranked Bea Machado Santos and Brianna Lashway at the No. 1 line. The Aggie duo went on to dispose of the Tiger tandem, 6-1.
No. 2 doubles was on serve at 3-3 before A&M's 44th-ranked duo of Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat broke Missouri's Kelli Hine and Clare Raley to go up, 4-3. The Aggie pair did not drop a game the rest of the way to close out a 6-4 victory, clinching the doubles point for A&M.
Missouri's Brittany Lashway and Cassidy Spearman held a narrow 5-4 lead over A&M's Ines Deheza and Domenica Gonzalez at No. 3, but the match was abandoned once the doubles point was determined.
A&M quickly took control in the singles, with Gonzalez winning eight consecutive games against Brittany Lashway at the No. 4 line to run away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead. A&M's lone freshman improved to a team-leading 15-8 overall, as well as 10-4 in dual matches only.
Deheza never trailed in her match as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Spearman at No. 5, putting the Aggies ahead, 3-0.
Pierson, who jumped out to a 5-1 first-set lead at the No. 2 line, clinched the winning point for A&M, defeating Hine, 6-2, 6-4, to give A&M a 4-0 lead.
The remaining three matches would finish within two minutes of each other. Bhosale had won three straight games to close out a 6-3 first-set win over Brianna Lashway at No. 3 and then overcame a 4-2 deficit in the second set by rallying to win four consecutive games to win the second set, 6-4, to make the team score 5-0.
Paalma quickly followed to put A&M up 6-0. The sophomore from Estonia broke away from 4-4 ties in each set to defeat Raley, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
In the only match-up between ranked players, A&M's Saska Gavrilovska completed the shutout, pulling away from 72nd-ranked Machado Santos for a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
It marked A&M's first shutout against an SEC team this season.
The Aggies return to the Mitchell Tennis Center on Easter Sunday to take on 26th-ranked Arkansas (14-7, 3-3 SEC), which fell, 5-2, at 15th-ranked LSU today. First serve against the Razorbacks is at 11 a.m.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Weaver quotes:
On his general thoughts on match…
"I'm definitely overall happy with the 7-0 victory. I think that's just what the doctor ordered. We all clicked at all six singles courts. We got the doubles point, and I'm happy that we got the doubles. I don't think it was necessarily the best doubles that we've played all year, but we have made some great strides. It's definitely a good feeling to get a 7-0 victory against a much improved team. No doubt, we are the more talented of the two, but to win 7-0 decisively, I am glad we all just clicked together. I feel like we played really well individually throughout the year. There hasn't been enough matches where we all really clicked and came together. I felt today was definitely a step in the right direction there.
"I didn't quite realize they were all straight-set victories, so that's really saying a lot about our team. It was a tough two-loss road swing we had last weekend, and one of our big speeches was let's get back home and get some good practice in. Then it was an awful week of wind. It was 20-30mph winds, so I can't say we had the best practices as far as quality. The girls actually gave it a great effort and good attitudes, and we toughed through it. If we hadn't toughed through it the last three days with the wind, we wouldn't have had such a precise showing today. So that is all credit to the girls for making it through the week's practice through some brutal conditions with the winds."
On staying undefeated at home…
"That was definitely one of our goals for the year and one of the big positive notes as we were coming off the trip last weekend: We are undefeated at home and play some of our best tennis at home and that hopefully we can continue that. I guess we have maybe four more matches at home, and hopefully can continue that and translate that into some more road wins. We really have some tough conditions thrown at us on the road, but it is what it is. There are so many good SEC teams and a lot of these matches are so equal. You have to hold serve, and that's what we did today. Hopefully we can keep that going. We definitely are a tough team to beat at home and especially when we are all clicking."
