Late comeback downs No. 4 Texas A&M
Mar 25, 2016 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 4 Texas A&M softball team dropped its series opener at No. 12 Georgia, 6-3, Friday at Jack Turner Stadium.
"Georgia did a great job of coming back," head coach Jo Evans said. "We had to make pitches when we need to. Give Georgia a lot of credit. They came out there and attacked the strike zone. We stranded a bunch of runners in scoring position. When you play a great team like this, you have to have timely hitting. I thought we did a good job of that in the beginning. I thought Keeli Milligan had a great game tonight."
The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as freshman Riley Sartain belted a leadoff homer to left field, her fourth of the season. Freshman Keeli Milligan then singled and stole her 36th base of season and second of the game to move into scoring position. After moving to third on a freshman Kaitlyn Alderink ground out, Milligan scored on a sophomore Tori Vidales single to left.
A&M (27-4, 2-2 SEC) added a run in the top of the fifth on a sophomore Ashley Walters RBI single. Alderink reached on an error and advanced to second on a Vidales single. Senior Cali Lanphear flew out to right field, allowing Alderink to move to third. Walters then poked a 1-0 pitch through the hole into left for her 22nd RBI of the season.
Georgia (27-5, 2-2 SEC) countered in the bottom half with a grand slam by Alyssa DiCarlo, before scoring two more in the sixth.
Freshman Samantha Show suffered the loss to move to 16-4 on the season. Show threw 5.2 innings, giving up six runs while striking out five.
The Aggies and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader Saturday due to potential inclement weather on Sunday. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., while game two is slated for a 4:30 start.
Both games can be seen on the SEC Network +, available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
