Mar 26, 2016 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – No. 4 Texas A&M softball was defeated 9-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 12 Georgia at Jack Turner Stadium.
The Aggies fall to 27-5 (2-3 SEC) on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 28-5 (3-2 SEC).
Georgia took an early 2-0 lead in the first on an Alyssa DiCarlo RBI infield single and bases loaded walk by Maeve McGuire. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third with a Tina Iosefa RBI single to center.
Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink broke up Brittany Gray's no-hitter in the fourth with a leadoff single up the middle and later scored on a sophomore Ashley Walters RBI fielder's choice. Alderink advanced to second on a sophomore Tori Vidales groundout and moved to third on a throwing error by UGA catcher Katie Browne. After senior Cali Lanphear was hit by a pitch, Walters sent a hopper to third, but Alderink was able to beat the throw home for Walters' 23rd RBI of the season.
UGA then countered with five runs on four hits in the fourth. Lacey Sumerlin led off the inning with a homer to left, before a DiCarlo two-RBI single and a McGuire two-RBI triple.
Sophomore Trinity Harrington suffered her first loss of the season, giving up five runs in three innings.
Freshman Keeli Milligan recorded her 37th stolen base of the season, tying her for third all-time for most stolen bases in a season with Sharonda McDonald (2007).
The game, which was postponed for an hour and 25 minutes, also featured a 48 minute delay in the middle of the top of the fifth.
A&M and Georgia squared off in the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the game.
