No. 9 Aggies post highest run total in Jo Evans era against San Diego
Mar 05, 2016 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 9 Texas A&M softball scored 21 runs, the most in the Jo Evans era, Saturday as the Aggies defeated San Diego, 21-0, in five innings at the USD Softball Complex.
"I am truly proud of the kids that came off the bench," Evans said. "Some kids that stood out in my mind were Kristen Cuyos and Breanna Dozier. Kristen was great all night. She had three runs and five RBI. Bre hitting that huge grand slam and getting five RBI. We made subs early and those kids were just crushing the ball. We really need that. We were too tight the last two days. It was nice to see our kids go out there and play the game it is supposed to played."
The Aggies (20-2) jumped all over the Toreros, scoring 10 runs in the top of the second. Sophomore Kristen Cuyos doubled to right center, scoring sophomore Ashley Walters and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Tori Vidales singled to right to score senior Breanna Dozier and sophomore Erica Russell. Senior Cali Lanphear followed with a single to right, allowing freshman Kaitlyn Alderink to score.
In Cuyos' second at bat of the inning, the Pearland, Texas native walked with the bases loaded to score Vidales. Dozier capped off the inning with a grand slam, her second of the season, to right field.
A&M added sixth more in the top of the third as Lanphear hit a two-RBI single to right field before Cuyos made it 12-0 with a single to right, scoring Vidales. Dozier singled up the middle to plate Lanphear before Russell walked with the bases loaded. Sophomore Kayla Ober drove in Cuyos on a groundout to second.
Junior Reagan Boenker led off the top of the fifth with her first home run of the season, before junior Celena Massey singled to right, scoring Ober and junior April Ryan. Cuyos doubled to center driving in her fourth and fifth runs of the game.
Senior Katie Marks stifled the Toreros in the circle, tossing a three-hit complete game shutout while striking out three. Marks now owns a 5-0 record and a 1.11 ERA.
In the Aggies first game of the day, A&M edged out Grand Canyon, 2-1. GCU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a triple by Taylor Kaye before the Aggies evened the game in the bottom of the third. Freshman Keeli Milligan led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on an Alderink groundout. Vidales roped a 3-2 pitch to right center for a single, plating Milligan.
A&M took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with no outs. Cuyos and Ryan drew back-to-back walks, before Dozier reached on a bunt. Senior Alex Masek, who pinch ran for Cuyos, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Freshman Samantha Show threw her ninth complete game of the season to move to 11-2, giving up only three hits and striking out seven.
A&M returns to action Sunday at 11 a.m. CT against Pitt before taking on the Utah Valley at 1:30 p.m. CT.
