COLLEGE STATION – Sophomore Tori Vidales knocked in three runs, while senior Cali Lanphear and sophomores Ashley Walters and Kristen Cuyos each drove in two as the No. 11 Texas A&M softball team defeated Arkansas, 11-3, Saturday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
"It is great to get a win. I love that our kids came out in the first inning and scored four runs to make a statement," head coach Jo Evans said. "We put pressure on their pitchers. I was pleased to see us be aggressive, but also take our walks. We got plenty of walks this game and you always want to win the freebie war and we did that. It feels good to get a big win and that first win a series."
Freshman Keeli Milligan led off the bottom of the first with a walk before stealing her nation-leading 40th base. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink drew a walk, before Vidales reached on a fielding error, which allowed Milligan to score. Lanphear followed with a two-RBI single to right, plating Alderink and Vidales. Cuyos gave the Aggies (28-6, 3-4 SEC) a 4-0 lead with an RBI single to left.
Arkansas (13-21, 0-7 SEC) got a run back in the second on a Claire Clark homer to left, but the Aggies countered with a run in the third. Senior Breanna Dozier walked and was pinch ran for by sophomore Erica Russell. Russell stole second and was knocked in on a Cuyos double down the left field line.
The Razorbacks tacked on a run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk from Ashley Diaz. A&M responded with a run of their own on a Walters RBI single left.
The Aggies extended their lead to 9-3, scoring three runs in the fifth. Sophomore Riley Sartain started the rally with a leadoff walk, before moving to second on a Milligan bunt single. After Alderink walked to load the bases, Vidales singled to left, driving in Sartain and Milligan. Lanphear walked, before Walters knocked a 2-0 pitch to left, scoring Alderink.
A&M sealed the win in the sixth with back-to-back bases loaded walks from Alderink and Vidales.
Freshman Samantha Show notched her 17th victory of the season to move to 17-5. The East Bernard, Texas native threw six innings, only giving up six hits with seven strikeouts.
The Aggies and Razorbacks return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. Game two of the series can be seen on the SEC Network and can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
