COLLEGE STATION – No. 15 Texas A&M softball dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 4 Alabama, 8-7, before unleashing 14 runs on the Crimson Tide to win 14-1 in game two at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The 14 runs by the Aggies (32-11, 6-9 SEC) are the most in a conference game since April 12, 2006, when A&M defeated Oklahoma State, 16-8, and the second most runs Alabama has given up in program history.
"It was so important for us to get a win. We needed that badly," head coach Jo Evans said. "It is nice to see our kids rally and step up. We have had our chances and squandered opportunities. To come out in the second game and take charge after gaining some momentum in the seventh inning of the first game was very pleasing to see. We know we need to be better throughout our lineup as the game goes on. I am happy for our kids. They work hard, and we needed a big win today."
A&M opened scoring in game two in the first inning on a junior April Ryan RBI single. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink recorded a one-out infield single, before sophomore Tori Vidales singled to center. Ryan then sent a pop fly in to short center causing two Alabama defenders to collide, which allowed Alderink to score.
In the second inning, the Aggies' offense came alive, scoring nine runs on five hits. Freshman Samantha Show led off the frame with a solo home run to left, followed by a home run to right field by Cali Lanphear.
Freshman Keeli Milligan hit an infield single, before stealing her 48th base of the season, tying Sharonda McDonald's school record set in 2006.
Vidales was walked intentionally to load the bases, prior to Ryan drawing a five-pitch walk, scoring Milligan. Sophomore Kristen Cuyos hit a two-RBI single to left, plating Vidales and sophomore Ashley Walters. Show walked to reload the bases before freshman Riley Sartain hit a grand slam to left to give the Aggies a 10-0 lead.
Alabama scored a run in the fourth on a Syndey Booker RBI single, but A&M responded with four runs of its own. With runners on first and second and two outs, Alderink doubled down the right field line, before Walters launched her seventh homer of the season.
Freshman Samantha Show earned the victory to move to 19-7 on the season, tossing a complete game three-hitter with five strikeouts.
In game one, Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Aggies countered with two runs on a Vidales dinger to left. The Crimson Tide regained the lead in the fourth as Merris Schroder homered to left, scoring Booker.
Vidales evened the game in the bottom half with a lead-off solo homer to left. Leona Lafaele belted a one-out home run to give Alabama a 5-4 lead, before the Tide scored four in the seventh.
A&M rallied for four runs in the seventh as Milligan singled on a bunt, before advancing to third on an Alderink single. Walters then took the first pitch of her at bat over the wall in center, cutting the lead to two.
Vidales went back-to-back, hitting her third home run of the game to left center. The La Porte, Texas native is the first Aggie to hit three home runs in a game since Nicole Morgan hit three against California-Bakersfield on Feb. 8, 2014.
The Aggies were able to load the bases with two outs on a Ryan single and back-to-back walks from Show and senior Breanna Dozier, but Alabama's Sydney Littlejohn was able to get out of the jam to earn her first save of the season. Sophomore Trinity Harrington was saddled with the loss to move to 6-3.
Texas A&M returns to action Wednesday for a doubleheader at Sam Houston State with game one scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and game two slated for 5:15. Both games can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
