Texas A&M Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 10 Texas A&M men's tennis team claimed matches Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center from South Carolina, 6-1, and Texas-Arlington, 4-1. The Aggies improved to 22-7 on the season and 6-3 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Gamecocks fell to 10-12 overall and 2-6 in league play and the Mavericks moved to 14-10 this year.
Senior Jackson Withrow and sophomore AJ Catanzariti led the charge for A&M, each winning a trio of matches on the day. Catanzariti clinched both matches, defeating Thomas Mayronne 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 of South Carolina and Daniel Armengol 6-4, 7-6(3) of UTA.
Against South Carolina, Withrow topped Alex Fennell, 7-6(2), 6-4 on court four after partnering with freshman Aleksandre Bakshi in a win over Gabriel Friedrich and Harrison O'Keefe. Withrow and Bakshi were victorious for a second time Sunday, topping Armengol and Jhonthan Gonzalez of Texas-Arlington in the day's second match.
The Aggies claimed the doubles point in both matches Sunday as junior Max Lunkin and sophomore Arthur Rinderknech joined Withrow and Bakshi in the win the column. The maroon and white clad pair topped Fennell and Andrew Schafer 6-2 on the third doubles court. Against the Mavericks, A&M won all three doubles matches, sophomores Jordi Arconada and Catanzariti defeated Carlos Arbiza and Mauricio Del Rio and freshman Oscar Janglin and junior James Martell bested Mario Muniesa and Guanarteme Nuez.
A&M went 5-1 in singles matches against South Carolina. In addition to Withrow and Catanzariti's wins, the Aggies found points from senior Shane Vinsant, Arconada and Lunkin. Against UTA, Bakshi, Catanzariti and Janglin claimed straight set victories to defeat the Mavericks.
The Aggies take to the road next weekend as they will face Kentucky Friday evening and Tennessee Sunday. A&M will conclude the regular season April 15 against Abilene Christian and LSU.
