Apr 08, 2016 | Men's Tennis
LEXINGTON, KY. – The No. 10 Texas A&M men's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 20 Kentucky Friday evening at the Boone Tennis Center in Lexington, Kentucky. For the second time in the last five matches all attention was on junior Max Lunkin. The Moscow, Russia native suffered a third set tiebreaker setback for the second time in as many weeks, falling in the last match standing against No. 2 TCU on March 28. Friday evening, Lunkin was bested by Austin Hussey 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2) to make the final score 4-3 in the Wildcats favor.
With the loss the Aggies fell to 22-8 on the season and 6-4 in SEC play, while the Wildcats improved to 17-6 overall and 5-4 in league action.
The maroon and white opened the match claiming the doubles point for the 23rd time this season and sixth straight. No. 78 Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant defeated William Bushamuka and Trey Yates, 6-4, on doubles court two. Lunkin and Arthur Rinderknech clinched the point, defeating Ryotaro Matsumura and Austin Hussey on doubles court three.
The match was played indoors, due to low temperature and precipitation in the forecast, allowing only four matches to be played at a time. The Aggies and Wildcats split the first four matches on court. A&M took a 2-0 advantage as No. 21 Arthur Rinderknech picked up his team-leading 10th victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 25 Bushamuka 6-4, 6-4 on court one.
Kentucky fought back into the match, tying it at two-all through triumphs from No. 52 Matsumura over No. 44 Vinsant on court two and Nils Ellefsen over No. 125 Jordi Arconada on court three. Sophomore AJ Catanzariti restored the A&M advantage, topping Enzo Wallart 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on court four.
As courts became available, senior Jackson Withrow made his way on to the court against Yates. The Omaha native took the first set from Yates 6-3, but fell 6-3, 6-4 in sets two and three to even the match at three apiece. Kentucky would complete the comeback as Hussey topped Lunkin and clinched the victory for the home team.
The Aggies close out their road schedule, Sunday at Tennessee. A&M will take on the Volunteers at 12 p.m. (CT) in Knoxville before finishing the regular season at the Mitchell Tennis Center against Abilene Christian and LSU Friday afternoon.
