A&M grad Fabrice Lapierre wins Australian long jump title, earns Olympic berth
Apr 03, 2016 | Track and Field
SYDNEY – Texas A&M graduate Fabrice Lapierre won the long jump at the Australian Athletics Championships on Sunday, which also served as the nomination trials for the Rio Olympics.
Lapierre earned his second Olympic team berth with a winning leap of 27-1 ¾ (8.27) at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, which served as host of the 2000 Olympics. Lapierre made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but missed the 2012 London Olympics with a hamstring injury.
"I can't explain how motivated I am for Rio," said Lapierre. "It's the only medal I don't have and I would love to get it and finish my career, whenever that is, with every medal available."
Lapierre has earned a silver medal in the long jump at two recent World Championships, the outdoor version in Beijing last summer and recently at the indoor version held in Portland last month.
