No. 18 Texas A&M Women's Tennis Routs Tennessee, 7-0
Apr 08, 2016 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 18th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory today over No. 75 Tennessee today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies improve to 14-8, including 6-5 in Southeastern Conference matches. They also move to 10-1 in home matches with only two home matches remaining in the regular season.
Tennessee, which has not defeated Texas A&M since the Aggies joined the SEC, suffers its fifth consecutive loss and falls to 8-13 overall and 1-9 in SEC matches.
The doubles was the most exciting part of the contest, with the point coming down to a tiebreaker. Play began with 32nd-ranked Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson giving the Aggies the early advantage after disposing of 73rd-ranked Sadie Hammond and Eve Repic, 6-1, at the No. 1 line.
Tennessee's Tiffany Tavares and Margo Taylor evened up the race for the doubles point, jumping out to a 4-1 lead against Ines Deheza and Domenica Gonzalez and finishing off the Aggie duo, 6-3, at the No. 3 line.
Meanwhile at No. 2, A&M's Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat also found themselves trailing, 4-1, against Kim Kermet and Brittany Lindl, but they fought their way back to put the match back on serve at 4-4. The match remained on serve and was tied at 6-6 to force a tiebreaker. Tennessee equaled its largest lead of the tiebreaker at 5-3 before A&M reeled off four consecutive points to get the 7-5 win, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
After the closely contested doubles, A&M dominated in singles, winning five of six matches in straight sets. Pierson was first off, winning nine consecutive games during her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kermet at No. 3.
Gonzalez put A&M up, 3-0, with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ashley Bongart at No. 5 before Deheza clinched the win for the Aggies and ran her team-leading win streak to five matches with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lindl at No. 4.
A&M continued to rack up points and keep the Volunteers scoreless as Paalma closed out each of her sets with four-game win streaks to defeat Ashlee Boles, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6, putting A&M up, 5-0.
In a meeting of ranked opponents, A&M's 35th-ranked Saska Gavrilovska overcame a 5-3 first-set deficit against No. 57 Hammond at No. 1, winning four consecutive games to take the first set, 7-5. Hammond won the first two games of the second set, but Gavrilovska won six of the next seven games to close out a 7-5, 6-3 win, putting the Aggies ahead, 6-0.
In the only three-set match, Repic spotted Bhosale a 3-0 first-set lead but fought back, using a four-game run to close out the set, 7-5, and post Tennessee's only singles set victory on the day.
Bhosale also jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but this time she held a lead for the remainder of the set to win, 6-3, and earn a split. With the team victory already determined, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the victor. With the score knotted at 3-3, Bhosale won the next six points to take a commanding lead. Repic ended the run to get within 9-4 before Bhosale won, 10-4, to close out the match and complete the shutout for the Aggies.
A&M continues its regular season-ending homestand Sunday as the Aggies play host to No. 4 Georgia (16-2, 9-1 SEC). First serve is at 12 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Weaver quotes:
His general thoughts on the match…
"The doubles was key. Those doubles points are so tricky. They are so short with the new scoring. I don't know if anyone has quite truly adapted to it yet this year. We got down, 4-1, at Nos. 2 and 3. No. 1 doubles played maybe one of the better matches they've played, and they have really turned it on in recent weeks, so that definitely helped us out and maybe took a little bit of pressure off at Nos. 2 and 3. We got down, 4-1, at 2 and 3, and luckily at No. 2, we just kind of hung in there. They have had such a great year and their record is kind of off the charts, and they were able to draw on that confidence to turn around a huge doubles point.
"You just never know. At the end of the day, you look at the singles scores, we won pretty routinely, but if we don't get the doubles point, things maybe look a little bit different and maybe Tennessee has a little more hope. So I thought it was a huge comeback at No. 2 doubles, and No. 1 doubles was nothing short of excellent."
