COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 18th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team faces its highest ranked opponent of the season Sunday as the Aggies play host to No. 4 Georgia at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is at noon, and fans showing any ticket from this weekend's Texas A&M-Georgia baseball series will be admitted free.
"We are definitely looking forward to the opportunity," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said when asked about the challenge of taking on the Bulldogs. "I feel like we have gradually gotten better and better throughout the season, and that is what a coach wants. If we can make things click on Sunday, we will be right there in the thick of things."
Texas A&M is 14-8 overall and in sixth place in the Southeastern Conference standings with a 6-5 league record after blanking No. 75 Tennessee, 7-0, on Friday in what marked the start of a regular season-ending three-match homestand for the Aggies.
Georgia, 16-2 overall, is 9-1 in SEC matches after defeating No. 16 LSU, 5-2, Friday in Baton Rouge. The Bulldogs are looking to stay in contention for the conference championship, as they sit alone in second place, one game behind league-leader Florida, who they face on Friday in Athens, Georgia.
The Aggies are led in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings by junior Saska Gavrilovska, who No. 35 in the nation. In doubles, Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson check in at team-high No. 32, their highest ranking of the spring. In addition, Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat are No. 61. They are riding a five-match win streak and are a team-best 20-5 overall, including 12-3 in dual matches only and 6-1 in SEC matches.
Senior Ines Deheza enters the weekend riding a team-best five-match win streak in singles. She leads the Aggies in singles wins in SEC matches with an 8-2 record, and she is tied with freshman Domenica Gonzalez for most wins overall with 18.
Georgia, whose only two losses were to then-No. 5 North Carolina on February 7 and at defending national champion and then-fifth-ranked Vanderbilt on March 26, boasts four nationally ranked singles players. Sixth-ranked Ellen Perez, a sophomore from Australia, is 23-4 overall, including a perfect 9-0 in SEC matches. Caroline Brinson is No. 27, and Kennedy Shaffer, 9-1 in SEC play, and Silvia Garcia are ranked 51st and 92nd, respectively. Although not ranked nationally, Laura Patterson strengthens the lower part of the lineup and enters the A&M match 7-0 in SEC matches, including 6-0 at the No. 6 line.
In doubles, Perez and Mariana Gould are ranked 23rd, and Garcia and Shaffer are No. 80.
Georgia is 10-0 in the all-time series against the Aggies, including 4-0 in matches played in College Station. Last year, the then-No. 2 Bulldogs held off A&M, 5-2, in Athens.
A&M wraps up the regular season Saturday, April 16, as the Aggies play host to LSU. It will be Senior Day at the Mitchell Tennis Center, and A&M seniors Ines Deheza, Stefania Hristov and Anna Mamalat will be honored before the match, which begins at noon.
