Aggies Fall to Sam Houston State, 5-0
May 17, 2016 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 2 Texas A&M Aggies were unable to get the bats going Tuesday night as they dropped a 5-0 contest to the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Sam Houston State (34-19) drew first blood in the top of the second. Zach Smith, Andrew Fregia and Robie Rojas strung together three consecutive singles to start the frame with Rojas' knock breaking the scoring seal. Fregia moved to third on a deep fly ball by Jaxxon Grisham and scored on a groundout to third base by Taylor Beene to stake the Bearkats to a 2-0 lead.
SHSU tacked on two more runs in the third inning. Bryce Johnson started the frame by blooping a single down the leftfield. After Riley McKnight grounded out to third and Lance Miles flied out down the leftfield line, Smith laid off a 2-2 curveball in the wheelhouse from Aggie starter Tyler Ivey before unloading on a full-count offering, sending it to the visitors bullpen for a two-run home run and the 4-0 advantage.
The Bearkats tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. With one out, Smith drew a five-pitch walk, moved to second on an infield single by Fregia and scored on a single by Rojas.
Ivey (2-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three in 2.2 innings. Jace Vines was solid in relief, working 3.1 shutout innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out one. Corbin Martin finished the game with 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out one.
Dakota Mills (2-1) earned the win for the Bearkats. He kept the Aggies off balance for 6.2 innings, working around six hits and one walk while striking out four. Miles Manning retired seven of the eight batters he faced in the final 2.1 to close out the shutout.
Nick Banks and Nick Choruby each logged two hits for Texas A&M (39-12).
Fregia and Rojas each logged three hits for Sam Houston State. Smith went 2-for-3 with three runs, one home run and two RBI.
It marked the first time Texas A&M has been shutout at home since February 21, 2014 when the Aggies lost a 1-0 decision to Sacramento State.
The Aggies return to action Thursday as they host the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels in a 6 pm contest to start a three-game series on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
Opening Statement…
"They got it started first and we were chasing two runs before we've hit for a second time, then chasing four runs before we've hit for third time. Really the only opportunity we had was in the third inning. We had guys first and second nobody out and we hit into a double play and we were limited in our opportunities from that point forward. "
On Sam Houston State starting pitcher Dakota Miles…
"He was just pounding the fastball on the outer half of the plate. His changeup and breaking ball were working for him and we didn't do a great job staying committed to the middle of the field."
Junior outfielder Nick Banks
On the performance…
"You have to tip your hat to them. He (Dakota Mills) pitched a heck of a game. He was throwing three pitches for strikes. They were just the better team today. We took great swings here and there and the balls just didn't fall when we needed them to, but that's baseball. We are just going to have to rebound and have a good practice tomorrow. They played as a team today better than we did and they came ready to play. The bats will be fine. We are a mature hitting group. We are going to rebound against Ole Miss. We will be ready to play."
On the weekend series…
"We're taking it one game at a time. Never had an SEC championship here at A&M and we will be looking to do that this weekend. We are going to have to play as a team first. Take it one step at a time and the rest will take care of itself."
