Texas A&M set to face Texas at NCAA Lafayette Regional
May 19, 2016 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M softball team will open play at the NCAA Lafayette Regional against Texas on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Louisiana-Lafayette's Lamson Park.
The Aggies and Longhorns will square off for the first time since April 29, 2012, with the series record between the two rivals even at 20-20. Texas A&M holds a 4-3 advantage over Texas in neutral site games.
"This game has added another flare to the regional," head coach Jo Evans said. "Right now, we are really focused on the regional itself and getting through that and beating whoever we need to beat. It does put a little wrinkle in that we are playing Texas since we haven't played them since we left the Big 12. I have watched a bunch of film on them and I know (Tiarra) Davis is their ace, and she will go at hitters. She has done a nice job for them. They have a lot of lefties in their lineup and they are a strong opponent. They have played some good teams this season, so I expect them to come out and compete and for it to be a tough game."
The Aggies (37-18), who are making their 15th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, are led by led by freshman Keeli Milligan, who is hitting .385 at the top of the lineup with her SEC-leading 52 steals. Sophomore Kristen Cuyos leads the team in home runs with 16 and in RBI with 59. Sophomore Tori Vidales paces the Aggie offense in batting average (.397), slugging (.731), OBP (.515), walks (38) and is second in home runs.
In the circle, freshman Samantha Show has recorded 23 wins, which is tied for the most in the SEC, with a 3.68 ERA and 156 strikeouts. Sophomore Trinity Harrington is 7-8 with a 3.79 ERA and senior Katie Marks is 7-0 with a 3.93 ERA.
Texas is currently 37-14 on the season and is led by Lindsey Stephens, who leads the team with a .401 batting average, 12 home runs and 43 RBI. Tiarra Davis is 22-9 on the season with a 1.72 ERA, while Paige von Sprecken is 11-3 with a 2.78 ERA. Kristen Clark holds a 4-2 mark with a 3.38 ERA.
Coverage of Friday's contest can be seen on ESPN2 as well as WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Every Aggie game at the Lafayette Regional can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
