No. 11 Texas A&M Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 15 UCLA
Aug 26, 2016 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies succumbed to an 83rd minute goal, dropping a 1-0 decision to the No. 15 UCLA Bruins in front of the third-largest crowd in school history.
The Aggies drew 5,875 for their annual Fish Camp Night, a tally that ranks ninth in the NCAA Division I record books for non-NCAA Tournament match attendance.
The Bruins scored the lone goal of the match with 7:58 remaining in the second half. MacKenzie Cerda started the scoring play at the left of the penalty arc. She sent a pass across the top of the box to Anika Rodriguez on the right side of the arc. Rodriguez took one dribble and slotted a pass to Chloe Castaneda entering the penalty box from the right corner. She found a shooting window and fired from 15 yards, hitting the right upper 90 for the 1-0 lead.
UCLA had an opportunity to add another goal in the 85th minute, but Texas A&M goalkeeper Danielle Rice stonewalled Annie Alvarado on a penalty kick to keep the score at 1-0.
Rice came up with five saves on the afternoon, as did UCLA's Teagan Micah who recorded her second shutout of the season.
For the match, Texas A&M owned an 11-8 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to convert the opportunities into goal. The Bruins held an 18-11 edge in shots and a slight 6-5 margin in shots-on-goal.
UCLA had the only shot-on-goal in the opening stanza, but Texas A&M had the best opportunity to score. In the eighth minute, Haley Pounds sent a pass in to the six-yard box from the right side, finding a charging Emily Bates. Bates got a foot on it, but was upended by late-arriving defender Kaiya McCullough, forcing the shot just wide right.
The Aggies came out of the intermission with a flurry, Bates and Pounds ripping off menacing shots, with Bates' coming from six-yards, but Micah made saves on both efforts in the first three minutes of the second half.
Cienna Arrieta forced Micah to make a pair of brilliant, one on a ripped shot from 20 yards in the 57th minute and another on a point-blank corner kick header in the 58th minute.
The Aggies return to action Sunday when they host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in a 6 pm match at Ellis Field.

Head Coach G Guerrieri
On tonight's game…
"I thought it was a fantastic game, just a brilliant crowd to see, the class of 2020 out here in full force. It makes for an atmosphere that's unmatched anywhere that you'll see around college soccer. The crowd was into it the whole time. The energy was fantastic coming off of them, and we needed it, to be able to go toe-to-toe with such a talented team as UCLA. I was happy for Aggies who came. They saw a great game. UCLA finished their best chance and we didn't finish our best chances. That was the difference in the game."
Senior goalkeeper Danielle Rice
On her performance and going forward…
"I didn't do enough. At the end of the day, I'm a goalkeeper. My job is to keep the ball out of the back of the net and I failed. We play Tulsa next Sunday and that's a perfect day to get a shutout so that's my goal."
On the Aggie defense…
"I thought they did great. They were connected for the most part. I mean the shot was just unlucky and it was just in the last seven minutes but other than that, the whole entire game I thought they were on fire. They were communicating well, moving well between each other, passing off markers on the other team well. It was just unlucky the way it ended up."
