Aggies Ladle in Victories at Harvard Chowdah Fest
Sep 19, 2016 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men's tennis team started it's fall season with an impressive showing at the 2016 Harvard Chowdah Fest in Boston, Mass., over the weekend. Aggies junior AJ Catanzariti claimed the singles title, while Catanzariti teamed with sophomore Aleksandre Bakshi to take the doubles crown.
Catanzariti, a Pittsburgh, Penn., native, picked up a pair of wins over the weekend, by topping Brian Yeung of Harvard and Gui Gomes of Illinois in straight sets. Catanzariti and Bakshi went 2-0 in doubles play en route to the doubles crown. The Texas A&M pair defeated Gomes and Alex Jesse of Illinois and Alex Lebedev and Josh Hagar of Notre Dame. Bakshi also had another pair of doubles victories in Bean Town, playing alongside freshman Hady Habib to dispose of Eddy Covalschi and Johnathan Small of Notre Dame and partnering with sophomore Kevin Lam to topple Andy Zhou and Logan Weber of Harvard.
"We were very pleased with AJ's return to competition and how sharp he was," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "These were his first matches since last season due to his injury. Max and Hady were very impressive, as well, in going undefeated in singles this weekend. This tournament was just what the doctor ordered for our team. We were able to get some much needed competition and an opportunity to see where we are and what we need to improve as we prepare for the upcoming ITA All American in Tulsa in two weeks."
Habib was impressive in his Maroon & White debut, going 4-0 in singles play at Chowdah Fest. The right-hander defeated Brendon Kempin and Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame along with Jean Thirouin and Kenny Tao of Harvard. In addition to the doubles win with Bakshi, Habib picked up a win alongside senior Frankie Colunga over Matt Gamble and Covalschi of Notre Dame.
Senior Max Lunkin joined Habib in the undefeated club over the weekend. The Moscow, Russia, native claimed wins against Gamble, Grant Solomon of Harvard and Pablo Landa of Illinois. Senior James Martell split four matches, defeating Andy Zhou and Galen Lee of Harvard.
The Aggies return to the practice courts for a couple weeks before heading to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American beginning on Oct. 1.
