COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 21st-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team plays host to the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters on Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, where all Texas A&M students with a valid school ID are admitted free. First serve is at 3 p.m.
The Aggies are 1-0 after opening the season Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin at the Mitchell Tennis Center. It marked the fifth consecutive year the Aggies won their season opener.
La Tech is 1-1 following its season opening doubleheader on Friday in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and will be facing its second consecutive ranked opponent. The Lady Techsters defeated Oral Roberts, 4-0, in the opening match and then fell to No. 5 Oklahoma State, 7-0.
"I expect La Tech to be a pretty solid team," Texas A&M second-year head coach Mark Weaver said, "and I think we will play even better tennis than we did on Saturday. We will be up for the challenge and ready to play another tough match. That is what we need early in the season, to get another match in and get match-tough."
Aggie senior Rachel Pierson, No. 85 in the national singles rankings, leads the Aggies with an 11-3 overall mark in singles. She clinched the victory against the Ladyjacks with a straight-set victory at the No. 1 line. Junior Tina Bokhua is the Aggies' highest ranked singles player at No. 57. She is 6-4 overall in singles and also earned a straight-set win against SFA at No. 2 singles.
Junior Macarena Olivares is second on the squad for most singles victories with a 10-3 record after recording an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory in her A&M spring season debut against the Ladyjacks.
Seniors Rutuja Bhosale and Pierson are No. 17 in doubles after posting an 11-2 record in the fall. Bhosale, however, did not play against SFA and Pierson paired with junior Eva Paalma for a dominating 6-0 victory at the No. 1 line.
A&M is 2-0 in the all-time series against Tech, but the teams have not met since 1986. The Aggies hosted both meetings and won each match by identical 9-0 scores.
