Women's Golf Shoots 54 Hole School-Record 14-Under At Florida State Match-Up
Feb 12, 2017 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla- The No. 23 Texas A&M women's golf team set a 54-hole school record by finishing the Florida Stare Matchup at 14-under par at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and Club. The Aggies finished the tournament in third place.
"We had a great finish to the tournament," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "To shoot 14-under in a college golf tournament, and break the school record is pretty neat."
Sitting in third place heading into the final round, the Aggies were two-below par with a wide gap between second and fourth. As a team, they carded an incredible 12-below par on Sunday, their second best round in school history only trailing their performance at the 2014 Alamo Invitational. Their three-day score of 14-under topped their previous best of -13 at the 2015 SEC Championship.
Hosts No. 4 Florida State (837, -27) captured the title for the second year in a row. The Seminoles finished 10 strokes clear of second-place No. 13 South Carolina (847, -17) and 13 in front of Texas A&M (850, -14).
Texas A&M's Bianca Fabrizio and Maddie Szeryk, two of three former winners in the field, both maintained spots near the top of the leaderboard on the final day. Szeryk (208, -8) held onto a share of second place with a two-under performance finishing three strokes back of champion Morgane Metraux of Florida State. Fabrizio (208, -6) went on a tear in the middle third of her round, playing the six holes at seven-below par. The senior finished the event in a share of fifth place, her eighth top-five finish of her career.
Courtney Dow (215, -1) jumped into a share of 10th place ascending 15 spots on the leaderboard in a round that included her second eagle of the tournament. It's the freshman's second top-ten finish of her career with just two full tournaments played.
Andrea Jonama (222, +6) finished T-33rd after a final-day 71 (-1), her best round of the season. Thanya Pattamakijsakul (220, +4) tied for 25th among the 66-player field carding a 74 (+2) on Sunday.
As a team, the Aggies have finished in the top half of ever tournament on the season with three-consecutive top-three or better finishes. Their final score of 850 was a 48-stroke improvement from their 2016 Florida State Matchup performance.
In the unique match-up portion of the event, which combines the efforts of two schools paired together, the Texas A&M and Florida State pairing won the event for the third straight year. The Seminoles and Aggies finished 48-strokes in front of the next closest pairing.
Next on the schedule for the Aggies is The Dickson hosted by Houston. They travel to The Woodlands for the event running Feb 27th through 28th.
