No. 13 Michigan Holds Off No. 15 Texas A&M, 4-2
Feb 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ROCKY HILL, Conn. – No. 15 Texas A&M made a furious rally after falling behind, 3-0, to 13th-ranked Michigan, but the Wolverines held on to win the match, 4-2, to conclude consolation action at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship at the Tennis & Fitness Center of Rocky Hill.
"It was truly the best fight I have ever seen," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Every Aggie would be beyond proud of the effort and fight from our group. We could not have put another ounce of effort and fight any more than we did. I am highly encouraged with the level of which are performing, and even more than that the way that we are handling ourselves in the matches. There will be plenty more bright moments to come from our Aggie women's tennis team throughout the season."
Texas A&M (6-3) won the first doubles match to be completed as Eva Paalma and Stefania Hristov won three consecutive games to close out a 6-4 victory over Chiara Lommer and Valeria Patrick at the No. 3 line. Michigan, however, would go on to win the next two doubles matches as well as the first two singles matches to be completed to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Fortieth-ranked Brienne Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook held off the Aggie duo of Tina Bokhua and Macarena Olivares, 6-4 at the No. 2 doubles line, and the Wolverines' third-ranked pair of Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian topped 16th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale and Rachel Pierson by the identical score at No. 1 to clinch the point.
Singles was a back-and-forth, closely contested affair that included a tiebreaker being played on all but one court and four of the six matches going to a third set.
Michigan opened singles play by winning the first set on four courts. Fahey, ranked 26th in the nation in singles, gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over 71st-ranked Pierson at the No. 1 line. Michigan then pulled ahead, 3-0, as 27th-ranked Minor held off a late rally by Bhosale to win, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, at court 2.
Olivares put the Aggies on the scoreboard, defeating Lommer, 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 4. Bokhua then pulled the Maroon and White within 3-2 as she defeated Najarian, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (6), at No. 3.
A&M's Saska Gavrilovska and Paalma both dropped their opening sets at courts 5 and 6, respectively, but both Aggies rallied to win their second sets and force a third set to determine the final outcome.
Paalma narrowly dropped her first set to Patiuk, 7-5, and was down 6-5 in the second. Paalma had fought off one match point and then won the deuce point to tie the set, 6-6, and force a tiebreaker. Patiuk held a 5-4 lead in the tiebreaker before Paalma reeled off three unanswered points to win the breaker and force a third set.
Meanwhile, Gavrilovska had come back after dropping her first set, 6-4, to Ruder-Hook by taking the second set, 6-2. The back and forth third set eventually went to a tiebreaker and was tied, 1-1, when Patiuk completed a three-game run to finish off Paalma, 6-3, to clinch the 4-2 victory for the Wolverines, who improve to 6-1.
