COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 17 Texas A&M battles No. 18 Arkansas in a top-20 tilt in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Sunday. First serve is at 1 p.m. at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.
The match will close out the first road trip of the Southeastern Conference schedule for the Aggies, who are still in search of their first league win after dropping a 4-3 decision at Missouri on Friday to fall to 8-6 overall and 0-3 in SEC play.
Arkansas, 8-0 in home matches, is riding an eight-match winning streak after defeating No. 29 LSU, 5-2, Friday in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks, who will be facing their first top-25 team of the season when they face the Aggies, improved to 11-2, including 2-0 in SEC matches, with the victory against the Tigers.
"We are looking to bounce back as a group after a six-hour marathon match with Missouri," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Arkansas has a very good team this year and is coming off a good and decisive win against LSU. This will no doubt be another challenge against a strong team on the road."
Texas A&M, 3-4 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season, won the doubles point against Missouri, and Rachel Pierson and Domenica Gonzalez posted three-set victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles lines, respectively. The Tigers won on the other four courts, including a three-set victory in the last match standing to clinch the win.
Pierson, No. 44 in the national singles rankings, improved to a team-leading 18-7 overall and moved into a tie with Rutuja Bhosale for most wins in dual matches only with an 8-4 mark, all at the No. 1 line. Gonzalez picked up her team-high seventh consecutive victory.
Ranked 19th in doubles, Pierson and Bhosale improved to 18-6 overall, including 7-4 in dual matches at the No. 1 line after clinching the doubles point against the Tigers with a 6-2 victory.
At No. 64, Shannon Hudson is the Razorbacks' highest ranked singles player. She is 14-4 overall and 9-1 in dual matches only—including 2-0 in SEC matches—and she is riding a five-match winning streak. Giulia Pairone is 7-0 in dual matches, and Leolia Jeanjean is riding a six-match win streak and is 10-1 in dual matches. Hudson and Pairone are 6-0 in doubles matches, including 2-0 at the No. 1 line and 4-0 at No. 2.
Texas A&M owns an 11-7 lead in the all-time series against Arkansas, including a 3-1 advantage in SEC matches only. In the most recent meeting, the then-26th-ranked Razorbacks ended a three-match losing skid against the Aggies, knocking off Texas A&M, 4-3, last year in College Station. Arkansas holds a slight 5-4 edge in matches played in Fayetteville, although A&M has come home victorious in each of its last two matches in The Natural State.
The Aggies return to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center March 17 and 19 as they play host to No. 4 Auburn and No. 46 Alabama.
