No. 17 Texas A&M Falls to No. 18 Arkansas, 6-1
Mar 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 17 Texas A&M was unable to end No. 18 Arkansas' eight-match win streak and hand the Razorbacks their first home loss of the season as the Aggies fell, 6-1, today at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center indoor courts.
With its first victory over a top-25 opponent, Arkansas improves to 12-2, including 3-0 in Southeastern Conference matches, and 9-0 in home matches. Texas A&M suffers its fourth consecutive loss and falls to 8-7, including 0-4 in league play.
"I simply have to give Arkansas a lot of credit today as they played extremely well at each line," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We definitely need a good week of practice and get a little bit better as we prepare for both Auburn and Alabama this weekend."
Arkansas pulled away to win the first two doubles matches to be completed to take a 1-0 lead. Ana Oparenovic and Mia Jurasic were first off as they topped Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma, 6-4, at the No. 2 line. Leolia Jeanjean and Natsuho Arakawa followed, pulling away from a 5-5 tie to defeat Macarena Olivares and Stefania Hristov at the No. 3 line to clinch the doubles point. The loss ended the Aggie pair's three-match win streak.
A&M's 19th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale and Rachel Pierson were knotted, 5-5, against Shannon Hudson and Giulia Pairone at the No. 1 court when the point was clinched and the match was stopped.
Arkansas carried the momentum into singles, winning the first set on four of six courts. Jeanjean went on to close out a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Olivares at the No. 3 line to put the Razorbacks ahead, 2-0, and Arakawa followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Paalma at Court 6 to give Arkansas a commanding 3-0 lead.
Hudson, No. 63 in singles, secured the victory for the Razorbacks, putting Arkansas ahead, 4-0, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 44th-ranked Pierson at the No. 1 line.
Tina Bokhua put the Aggies on the scoreboard and prevented the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pairone at No. 5, but it would be the only point Texas A&M would register. Jurasic put the Razorbacks up, 5-1, with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 line over Gonzalez, who entered the match riding a seven-match win streak.
No. 118-ranked Oparenovic closed out the match with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 12-10, victory over 85th-ranked Bhosale at the No. 2 line.
The Aggies return to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, Friday and Sunday, March 17 and 19 as they play host to No. 4 Auburn and No. 46 Alabama, respectively.
