COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Coming off its second highest ranked home victory in program history and its fourth highest ranked win overall, the 22nd-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team returns to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Sunday to play host to No. 44 Alabama. First serve is at 12 p.m., and it is a part of a doubleheader with the Aggie men's tennis team, which will be hosting No. 2 Ohio State also at noon.
One ticket is good for both matches, and all fans with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free.
"We are coming off of a very promising and encouraging victory that should give us some great confidence heading into the Alabama match," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "I feel that the Auburn match was the first time that we had all six singles matches playing at a high level all together, and that ultimately was the difference maker.
"Alabama is a solid team with two-time NCAA doubles champion Erin Routliffe. Also, Routliffe and Andie Daniell were both NCAA singles qualifiers last year, so Alabama obviously has a strong roster. And it should be an exciting day tomorrow with both of our tennis programs competing at the same time."
The Aggies defeated No. 5 Auburn, 4-1, on Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center to improve to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in Southeastern Conference matches. A&M dropped the doubles point but got singles victories from 44th-ranked Rachel Pierson, who topped 29th-ranked Alizee Michaud at the No. 1 line, Domenica Gonzalez, Tina Bokhua, and 85th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale, who clinched the team victory with her come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over 71st-ranked Andi Dikosavljevic at the No. 2 line. It capped A&M's highest ranked win since upsetting No. 4 Florida in the quarterfinals of the 2014 SEC Tournament in Columbia, Missouri.
Alabama suffered its fifth consecutive loss and dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-5 in SEC matches after narrowly falling at LSU, 4-3, on Friday.
The Tide has two ranked singles players in No. 59 Routliffe and No. 124 Daniell. The doubles team of Routliffe and Maddie Pothoff is No. 25.
Texas A&M has won the last three meetings against the Tide and holds a narrow 5-4 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1980. The Aggies also are 3-0 against Alabama in matches played in College Station. Last year, Texas A&M defeated then-No. 38 Alabama, 4-1, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Tide's most recent victory against the Aggies was a 4-1 triumph in the semifinals of the 2014 SEC Tournament.
