COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 20th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team returns to Southeastern Conference play and continues its four-match road swing Saturday as the Aggies take on 16th-ranked LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. First serve is at 11 a.m. at the LSU Tennis Complex.
"Playing LSU on the road will no doubt bring its challenges, and we will definitely need to play at a high level," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Despite some ups and downs that we have had this season, we truly are progressing quite well as a team and we are getting a bit better each and every day."
The Aggies are 10-8 overall after dropping a 4-0 decision in a nonconference match at 15th-ranked Baylor on Wednesday. Texas A&M has won its last two SEC matches to improve to 2-4 in league play. In their most recent conference matches, the Aggies defeated No. 5 Auburn and No. 44 Alabama last weekend. The win against Auburn marked the second highest ranked home win in school history, and it tied for the fourth highest ranked victory all-time.
The Tigers are 11-4, including 4-2 in SEC matches only and 9-1 in home matches. They are riding a three-match win streak following 4-3 victories in each of the last three contests. Last weekend, LSU defeated both No. 44 Alabama and No. 5 Auburn, with freshman Jade Lewis clinching both victories at the No. 1 singles court. The win against Auburn marked the highest ranked win in program history.
In the individual ITA national rankings, Texas A&M senior Rachel Pierson, who did not play in the loss to Baylor, is a season-high No. 39 with a team-leading 19-9 record overall. Senior Rutuja Bhosale is No. 91 in singles and leads the Aggies with a 10-6 mark in dual matches only.
Bhosale and Pierson are No. 12 in doubles, marking the highest ranking the duo has ever received. The tandem is 20-6 overall, including 9-4 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 line. They are 6-4 against nationally ranked opponents and are riding a three-match win streak.
Lewis leads the Tigers with a career-high No. 30 singles rankings. She is 11-1 in dual matches, including 10-1 at the No. 1 line, and she is riding a three-match win streak. Joana Valle Costa is ranked 86th in singles with a 10-4 overall mark, and Ryann Foster is No. 105 and leads the Tigers with a 21-8 overall singles record. Although unranked, Jessica Golovin is 12-3 in dual matches and is riding a team-best four-match win streak.
Valle Costa and Foster are a team-high No. 20 in doubles, marking LSU's highest ranked doubles tandem since the 2008-09 season. The pair is 10-2 overall, including 7-2 in dual matches only, all at the No. 1 line. In addition, they are 3-0 in SEC matches and are riding a three-match win streak.
Texas A&M is 27-11 in the all-time series against LSU—including 11-5 in matches played in Baton Rouge—and has won eight of the last nine meetings. Last year A&M defeated 18th-ranked LSU, 4-0, in College Station in both teams' final match of the regular season.
