No. 21 Texas A&M Blanks No. 23 Tennessee, 4-0
Apr 14, 2017 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 21st-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match with a 4-0 victory over No. 23 Tennessee today at Barksdale Stadium.
"It was a very tough, gritty and decisive effort for our group of ladies," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "To come in and beat a Top 25 team on the road on their home courts really says a lot about where we are as a group and how we are starting to raise our game to the next level."
The Aggies, who posted their first shutout in Southeastern Conference matches this season, improve to 15-11 overall and 5-7 in SEC matches. It marked A&M's fourth consecutive shutout in the series against the Vols, who drop to 0-5 against the Aggies since A&M joined the league.
Tennessee, which was aiming to move into a tie with A&M in the SEC standings, falls to 16-10, 3-9 SEC.
The Aggies won the first two doubles matches to be completed to take a 1-0 lead. A&M's Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma were tied with Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck, 1-1, at the No. 2 line before the Aggie duo reeled off five consecutive games to close out a 6-1 victory.
Saska Gavrilovska and Stefania Hristov clinched the point with their fourth consecutive victory at the No. 3 line. The Aggie duo jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva, but the Tennessee tandem fought back and got within 5-4 before A&M completed a 6-4 victory to secure the doubles point for the Aggies.
In a battle of ranked opponents, A&M's fourth-ranked Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale had won three consecutive games to take a 5-4 lead over 72nd-ranked Brittany Lindl and Eva Repic at the No. 1 line when the doubles point was decided and the match was abandoned.
The Maroon and White won four of six first sets at the start of singles. Gonzalez quickly gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead as she raced to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hammond at the No. 3 line. No. 22-ranked Pierson, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, then put A&M ahead 3-0 and won her team-leading sixth consecutive match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 59th-ranked Lindl at No. 1.
Paalma clinched the victory for the Aggies at the No. 6 line. The junior from Estonia overcame a 4-1 deficit against Schuck to take the first set, 7-5, and then cruised to a 6-1 second-set victory to complete the Aggies' 4-0 shutout.
Bhosale, ranked 79th, had split sets against Repic at No. 2, dropping the first set, 6-1, but rebounding to take the second set, 6-4, to force a third set. Repic, who is riding a team-best three-match win streak for the Vols, had built a 3-1 lead in the final frame before the team victory was determined and the match was stopped.
Gavrilovska was close to potentially getting a straight-set victory, as she held a 6-4, 5-4 lead over Riley at the No. 4 line when play was stopped.
At the No. 5 line, Silva won a tiebreaker, 7-5, against A&M's Macarena Olivares to win the first set, 7-6, and held a 3-2 lead in the second set when the match ended.
The Aggies conclude the regular season Sunday at No. 2 Georgia. The Bulldogs (17-3, 11-1 SEC) are riding a 10-match win streak and stayed in a three-way tie for first place in the SEC standings with a 5-2 victory over 19th-ranked LSU today.
