COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 21st-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team aims to extend its win streak to five as well as record the highest ranked victory in program history Sunday when the Aggies close out the regular season at No. 2 Georgia. The match against the Bulldogs begins at noon (1 p.m. ET) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, site of this year's NCAA Championships.
Texas A&M won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 15-11 overall and 5-7 in SEC matches with a 4-0 victory at No. 23 Tennessee on Friday. The Aggies are tied with Auburn for ninth place in the SEC standings and hold a slim chance of moving into a tie for sixth with a win against Georgia and losses by Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State.
Georgia (17-3, 11-1 SEC) is riding a 10-match win streak after defeating No. 19 LSU, 5-2, on Friday and is aiming for the program's 10th SEC regular season championship. The Bulldogs, who are 12-0 in the all-time series against Texas A&M, need a win against the Aggies to seal a share of the SEC title with either Florida or Vanderbilt, who go head-to-head on Sunday.
Senior Rachel Pierson, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, is riding an A&M-best six-match win streak in singles and leads the Aggies in victories with a 25-11 overall record and a 15-8 ledger in dual matches only, all at the No. 1 line. She is 6-5 in SEC contests only, tying for the team lead for most wins.
Pierson is a season-high No. 22 in the ITA national singles rankings, and she and partner Rutuja Bhosale, No. 79 in singles, are an all-time program-high No. 4 in doubles. The duo is 24-8 overall, including 8-6 against ranked opponents, as well as 13-6 in dual matches only and 6-3 in SEC matches, all at the No. 1 line.
The duo of Saska Gavrilovska and Stefania Hristov enters the Georgia match sporting a team-best five-match win streak.
Georgia boasts five players in the national singles rankings, including freshman Eleni Christofi, who is a team-high No. 11 with a 28-4 record, including a 14-4 mark against ranked opponents and 16-1 ledger in dual matches only. She is 9-1 in SEC matches, all at the No. 2 line, and she is tied for the team lead with an eight-match win streak.
Ellen Perez, 10-5 at the No. 1 line, is ranked 25th, and Caroline Brinson and Kennedy Shaffer, who both reached the 20-victory mark in the Bulldogs' 4-0 victory at Missouri last Sunday, are Nos. 28 and 67, respectively. Marianna Gould is No. 112.
In doubles, 11th-ranked Brinson and Perez enter the weekend 7-3 overall and in SEC matches only, all at the No. 1 line. Christofi and Shaffer are No. 29 and 12-3 overall, but they had their seven-match win streak snapped and suffered their second SEC loss as LSU took the doubles point on Friday.
The 2017 SEC Tournament begins Wednesday, April 19 at Vanderbilt's Brownlee O. Currey Jr., Tennis Center in Nashville, with the championship match slated for Sunday, April 23 at noon.
