No. 25 Texas A&M Gets Crucial 4-1 Victory Over No. 28 Ole Miss
Apr 02, 2017 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. – The 25th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team concluded a four-match road swing with a crucial 4-1 victory over No. 28 Ole Miss today at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
With the win, the Aggies snap a three-match losing skid and improve to 11-10, including 3-6 in Southeastern Conference matches only. Ole Miss drops to 12-8 overall and 3-6 in conference matches.
"The girls showed nothing but grit and determination today, and I expected nothing less from our group as they have shown me this type of effort all year long," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "I have been very proud of how we have showed up for every match this year, and I know that our team is fighting as hard as anyone in the country this season and we ultimately were rewarded with a very good win today. Ole Miss just beat a very good team in LSU, 4-0, on Friday, and for us to come in here today and leave with a 4-1 win really shows a lot about the character of this group."
Texas A&M was first on the scoreboard, winning the last two doubles matches to be completed to take a 1-0 lead. Although Ole Miss began the match by taking the early lead after Zalina Khairudinova and Tea Jandric downed A&M's Saska Gavrilovska and Stefania Hristov, 6-2, at the No. 3 line, the 12th-ranked duo of Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale evened the race for the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles at No. 1. It was the sixth consecutive win for the Aggie duo.
Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma then clinched the doubles point for the Aggies with a 6-4 win over Natalie Suk and Anna Vrbenska at No. 2.
Khairudinova tied the team score at 1-1 at the start of singles, defeating Gavrilovska, 6-3, 6-2, but Texas A&M would win the next three matches to be completed to secure the victory.
Bhosale, ranked 91st in the national singles rankings, quickly returned the lead to A&M with a 6-3, 6-3 win over 82nd-ranked Natalie Suk at Court 2. Pierson, ranked 39th, completed a major comeback with a three-set victory over 71st-ranked Hartono at No. 1. Hartono cruised to a 6-0 first-set win before Pierson got in sync and won the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead.
Tina Bokhua clinched the victory for A&M, defeating Jandric, 6-1, 7-6, at the No. 5 line. Jandric came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set and eventually forced a tiebreaker. Bokhua pulled away for a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to put the Aggies up, 4-1, and secure the victory.
Gonzalez had split sets with Vrbenska at No. 4, winning the first set, 6-0 and falling in the second set, 6-2. Vrbenska held a 5-3 lead in the third set when the match was abandoned.
Paalma had won her first set against Bortles, 7-5, at No. 6 but trailed 4-1 in the second set when the match was stopped.
The Aggies have only five regular-season matches remaining and close out their home schedule next weekend. They will celebrate Senior Day and recognize Rutuja Bhosale, Saska Gavrilovska, Rachel Pierson and Mason Strickland on Friday, April 7 when Texas A&M plays host to No. 5 Vanderbilt. First serve against the Commodores is at 4 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
A&M concludes its home slate on Sunday, April 9 with a doubleheader against Kentucky and Prairie View A&M. The match time against the Wildcats has been changed to 11 a.m., and first serve of the Prairie View A&M match has been changed to a 4 p.m.
