COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team celebrates Senior Day on Friday as the Aggies play host to seventh-ranked Vanderbilt. First serve is at 4 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, and everyone with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free.
The Aggies, who have five seniors on the roster—Rutuja Bhosale, Saska Gavrilovska, Stefania Hristov, Rachel Pierson and Mason Strickland—are 11-10 overall and 3-6 in Southeastern Conference matches after defeating 28th-ranked Ole Miss, 4-1, on Sunday in Oxford to conclude a four-match road swing.
Vanderbilt, 13-5 overall and riding a four-match win streak, is in a three-way tie with Florida and Georgia for first place in the SEC standings with an 8-1 mark in league play. Most recently, the Commodores disposed of then-No. 19 Arkansas, 5-2, in Nashville on Sunday. Vanderbilt, whose final match of the regular season is against the top-ranked Gators, suffered its only SEC loss at Kentucky on March 18.
"We are no doubt looking forward to our match with Vanderbilt on Friday," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "They have a very strong team and have had an excellent season. Our girls are excited and looking forward to the match and the challenge that lies ahead. We are coming off a very solid win, beating Ole Miss on the road, and I am very pleased with how our practices have been going since our return home.
"Friday will be a very special day as we honor our seniors on Senior Day. We have accomplished great things over the years with this fine group of ladies, and I couldn't be more proud of what they have done for our program and how they have represented our program over their years here in Aggieland. The years have truly flown by. I am confident that we will perform well as a group, and they are glad to be back on our home courts as we close out the last two regular-season home matches."
Vanderbilt holds an 8-3 lead in the all-time series against Texas A&M, although the Aggies are 3-1 against the Commodores in SEC matchups only. Last year, No. 7 Vanderbilt ended a three-match losing skid against the Aggies with a 6-1 victory at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville.
The last time the two teams met in College Station, then No. 10 Texas A&M scored a thrilling 4-3 victory over eighth-ranked and eventual national-champion Vanderbilt on April 10, 2015, at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Then-sophomore and 39th-ranked Pierson clinched the victory, winning a third-set tiebreaker in the last match standing against Vanderbilt sophomore and seventh-ranked Sydney Campbell at No. 1 singles.
Pierson enters Friday's match ranked a team-high 38th in the ITA national singles rankings and leading the Aggies in total wins with a 20-11 overall record. Bhosale is ranked 107th and leads A&M in wins in dual matches only with an 11-7 mark. She is 4-3 in SEC matches only, tying sophomore Domenica Gonzalez for the team lead for most wins in conference play.
Pierson and Bhosale are ranked an all-time high No. 6 in doubles and are riding a six-match winning streak. The pair is 12-4 at the No. 1 line, including 6-1 in SEC matches only, and is 23-6 overall.
Bhosale and Hristov, who typically plays No. 3 doubles with Macarena Olivares, have 88 career doubles victories apiece, tying for ninth place in the A&M career records. They each need one more win to move into a tie for eighth with Morgan Frank, who tallied 89 doubles victories from 2008-11.
Vanderbilt is led by fourth-ranked Astra Sharma. The redshirt junior is riding an eight-match winning streak in singles and is 8-0 in SEC matches. Sharma boasts a 26-6 overall singles record, including a 14-3 ledger in dual matches only.
Two-time singles All-American Sydney Campbell is ranked 15th in the nation in singles, and Christina Rosca and Austin, Texas, native Fernanda Contreras are 72nd and 96th, respectively.
Sharma, a 2015 doubles All-American, is ranked 10th in the nation in doubles with Emily Smith and No. 69 with Emma Kurtz.
A&M concludes its home slate on Sunday, April 9 with a doubleheader against No. 11 Kentucky and Prairie View A&M at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The match against the Wildcats has been changed to an 11 a.m. start, and first serve against the Panthers has been changed to 4 p.m.
