Texas A&M Drops SEC Opener at Auburn, 1-0
Sep 15, 2017 | Soccer
AUBURN, Alabama – The Texas A&M offense gave the Auburn defense a lot of work in the second half, but the No. 22 Aggies were unable to find an equalizer and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Tigers in the SEC opener Friday evening at Auburn Soccer Complex.
Trailing 1-0 coming out of the intermission, Texas A&M (4-2-1, 0-1-0 SEC) turned up the offensive intensity owning advantages in shots (14-5) and corner kicks (3-1) in the stanza, but the Maroon & White managed to get just three shots-on-goal with Auburn goalkeeper Sarah LeBeau making the save on all three to keep the clean sheet.
The most tenacious effort came in the final 20 minutes with 11 shots by the Aggies, including five by Ally Watt, but to no avail.
Auburn tallied the match's lone goal from distance in the ninth minute. Hannah Alspach notched her first goal of the season striking a 30-yard left footer from the right outside channel into the left upper 90 on an assist from Kristen Dodson.
At the intermission, the Aggies owned a 5-4 edge in shots, but all four of Auburn's efforts were on goal. Cosette Morche made three saves in the half, including two dangerous efforts in an eight second span in the 18th minute.
The Aggies' best scoring opportunity in the first half came in the fourth minute when Brittany Crabtree went searching in the penalty box, but was stonewalled by LeBeau.
Texas A&M held the advantage in shots (19-9) and corner kicks (6-2) for the match, but shots-on-goal were even at 5-5.
The Aggies return to action Thursday as they host the Florida Gators in a 6 pm contest at Ellis Field.

On the match...
"It was a disappointing loss to open SEC play. The team fought hard to get a lot of scoring chances, including numerous opportunities in the six-yard box, but we weren't able to produce. Auburn got a great goal early and they made it stand. Auburn's goalkeeper made some tremendous stops and their defense was courageous in getting their body between the ball and some of the shots. The game is about finishing your chances. That's something we did last Sunday and something we have to do in every match down the road."
