NASHVILLE- No. 15 Texas A&M women's basketball continues its run in the SEC Tournament today, taking on No. 24 LSU in the SEC quarterfinals at Bridgestone Arena. Tip will be 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Mississippi State/Kentucky game, which will be approximately 2 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on SEC Network, with Courtney Lyle, Tamika Catchings and Steffi Sorensen on the call. The No. 5 seed Aggies (23-8, 11-5 SEC) blew out No. 13 seed Arkansas, 82-52, on Thursday to improve to 3-0 all-time in SEC Tournament second round games and advance to the quarterfinals. The 30-point margin of victory against the Razorbacks was A&M's second largest win in a conference tournament game with coach Gary Blair at the helm. The Aggies, aiming to advance to a conference semifinal for the 11th time in 13 years, have won their last three games by a total of 93 points, having defeated Arkansas 104-60 on Feb. 22, and then-No. 11 Missouri 82-63 on Feb. 25 to close out the regular season.
Chennedy Carter leads the Aggies, and all Division I freshmen, with 21.5 points per game. She was named SEC Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, and picked up First Team All-SEC honors. Khaalia Hillsman, averaging 14.4 points per game, was named Second Team All-SEC.
The Aggies are 8-4 in SEC Tournament history, winning the event in 2013 and advancing to three semifinals in five years. Since current head coach Gary Blair was hired in 2003-04, Texas A&M is 22-11 in conference tournaments with three tournament titles.
LSU (19-8, 11-5 SEC) had a double bye over the first two rounds of the tournament after earning the No. 4 seed. The Lady Tigers finished the regular season in a four-way tie for fourth place in the league with Missouri, Tennessee and Texas A&M but received the higher seed by going a combined 4-1 against those teams during the regular season.
A&M and LSU split the regular season series with each team winning on its home court. Texas A&M defeated LSU, 69-59, on Jan. 22 at Reed Arena, and the Lady Tigers came out on top in an 80-78 victory at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Feb. 11.
LSU, which won the tournament title in 1991 and 2003, is 36-37 all-time in SEC Tournament games. The last time the Lady Tigers were the No. 4 seed was 2015 when they advanced to the semifinals with a 71-65 quarterfinal victory over No. 5 Texas A&M in the only time the two teams have previously met in the tournament.
