Weaver Collects 50th Career Victory as Texas A&M Defeats No. 25 Mississippi State, 4-1
Mar 30, 2018 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mark Weaver, in his third season as head coach of the Texas A&M women's tennis team, picked up the 50th victory of his head coaching career as the Aggies defeated 25th-ranked Mississippi State, 4-1, today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Aggies, who improve to 15-4, including 5-3 in Southeastern Conference matches as well as 13-1 in home contests. Meanwhile, Mississippi State had its five-match winning streak snapped, and the Bulldogs fall to 14-6 overall and 5-4 in conference matches.
A&M won the first two doubles matches to be completed to take a 1-0 lead. The Aggies' senior duo of Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma jumped out to a 4-1 lead against Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak and pulled away for a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 line.
A&M's freshman pair of Tatiana Makarova and Riley McQuaid followed suit at No. 2, jumping out to a 4-1 lead against Janina Braun and Magda Adaloglou en route to the 6-2 win that clinched the doubles point for the Aggies.
The Bulldogs' Anastasia Rentouli and Sara Lizariturry were up a service break and led Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Macarena Olivares, 3-2, at No. 3 when the doubles point was clinched and the match was stopped.
Olivares quickly put the Aggies ahead, 2-0, at the start of singles as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Braun at the No. 2 line. Vozniak then put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard by holding off Faa-Hviding, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6, but it would be the only point for Mississippi State.
McQuaid improved to 8-0 at the No. 4 line and put A&M up, 3-1, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rentouli, who had her team-leading six-match winning streak snapped.
Although McQuaid had put the Aggies within one match of clinching the team victory, the remaining three courts were back-and-forth affairs and were on track to go down to the wire. Gonzalez had dropped her first set, 6-3, to Harrison at No. 1 but won two consecutive games to pull away for a 6-4 second-set win to force a third set. Paalma had won two consecutive games to take a 6-4 first-set win over Adaloglou at No. 3, but the Bulldog freshman was up, 5-2, in the second set when McQuaid gave the Aggies the 3-1 lead.
Makarova had won the first set, 6-2, against Lizariturry at No. 5, but Lizariturry had turned the table and raced to a 6-0 win in the second set. Makarova was up a break, 4-2, in the final set when McQuaid finished. Lizariturry then got within 4-3 before Makarova won the next three games to close out the 6-3 third-set victory to clinch the win for the Aggies.
Gonzalez and Harrison were tied at 1-1 in the third set and Adaloglou was up, 5-4, against Paalma when Makarova clinched the team victory, and the two matches would go unfinished.
The Aggies conclude their home schedule and celebrate Senior Day on Easter Sunday as A&M plays host to No. 10 Ole Miss at 12 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Seniors Domenica Gonzalez, Eva Paalma and Macarena Olivares will be honored. General admission is free, and Aggie sunglasses will be given to the first 50 fans in attendance.

Texas A&M Postmatch Quotes:
Head Coach Mark Weaver
On today's match…
"Great job by the girls today. They played very, very well. Excellent in the doubles. We were trying some new teams today. We weren't actually able to prepare quite the way we wanted to with the weather this week, so I wasn't quite sure how the doubles would go. I felt good about the teams, just the chemistry and partnering up together, and just complementing each other. So I was very pleased with how the doubles went. It was definitely an important point for us. The singles, we played very, very well. Mississippi State is a very fine team. They have been playing some very good tennis and we really took it to them. I felt like we out-competed them and outplayed them. No doubt the match was getting kind of hairy there at the end, and I really felt like the girls rose to the occasion on the big points to close out the sets and close out the matches."
On his 50th career win as head coach…
"It's definitely nice to get the 50th career win. Time flies. This is my third year now as the head coach, so it's hard to believe. Fifty, it feels good, but I'm just definitely way more happier for the girls than myself, and I just can't wait for Senior Day on Sunday. We have another very good team coming to play us in Ole Miss. I know the girls are going to come out and play with heart and play with fight, just the way we have all season, so I'm really looking forward to the match."
