Women's Tennis Falls to No. 20 Auburn, 4-2
Apr 13, 2018 | Women's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – The Texas A&M women's tennis team won the doubles point but was unable to hold off the 20th-ranked Auburn Tigers in a 4-2 loss tonight at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
"It was a tough match today," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We played very well in the doubles, but unfortunately we came up a bit short in the singles. Credit to Auburn for playing the big points a little better than we did."
With the loss, the Aggies fall to 15-8, including 5-7 in Southeastern Conference matches. Auburn, which was celebrating Senior Day, improves to 19-9 overall, including 7-5 in league play.
A&M won the first two doubles matches to be completed. The 65th-ranked duo of seniors Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez was first off the court, defeating Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo, 6-2, at the No. 1 line.
Tatiana Makarova and Macarena Olivares then clinched the point for A&M, winning three consecutive games to pull away for a 6-3 victory over Andie Dikosavljevic and Alannah Griffin at No. 2. The No. 3 line was on serve with Auburn's Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith holding a 5-4 lead over A&M's freshman duo of Riley McQuaid and Dorthea Faa-Hviding, when the doubles point was clinched and the match was abandoned.
Auburn won four of six first sets to begin singles. Meredith evened the score at 1-1 as she was first off following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over McQuaid at No. 4. Olivares returned the lead to A&M, 2-1, and posted the highest ranked win of her career with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 47th-ranked Daniel at the No. 2 line. The win snapped Daniel's team-best four-match win streak.
Michaud evened the score for the final time, defeating Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1.
Russo gave the Tigers their first lead, 3-2, coming back after dropping the first set to defeat Makarova, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. Georgie Axon then clinched the win for Auburn, pulling away from Faa-Hviding, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 6.
Paalma was in a battle with Dikosavljevic at No. 3, but the match would go unfinished. Dikosavljevic won the opening set, 6-3, but Paalma came back to take the second set, 6-4, to force a third set. Dikosavljevic held a narrow 3-2 lead in the third when the match was stopped.
The Aggies close out the regular season at Alabama on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Crimson Tide is 14-14 overall and 1-11 in SEC matches after dropping a 4-3 decision against LSU today.
The SEC Tournament is April 18-22 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
