Women's Tennis Falls to Alabama in Regular Season Finale, 4-3
Apr 15, 2018 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama won the last match standing to complete a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Texas A&M in both teams' final match of the regular season today at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
"It was very chilly, very windy conditions, but at the end of the day we had the match in our racket and we weren't able to close it out," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Credit to Alabama for coming up with the goods at the end."
The Aggies drop to 15-9 overall and close out Southeastern Conference play 5-8 to tie LSU for ninth place. A&M will be the No. 9 seed at the SEC Tournament and will take on No. 8 seed Kentucky on Thursday at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET) at the University of Tennessee's Barksdale Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Alabama, which was celebrating Senior Day, improves to 15-14 overall and 2-11 in SEC matches.
The Aggies won the doubles point against the Crimson Tide, with 65th-ranked Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez giving A&M the early edge by defeating Andie Daniell and Ann Selim, 6-2, at the No. 1 line. The Tide evened the race for the doubles point, with Alba Cortina-Pou and Smith Hinton winning five consecutive games for a 7-5 comeback win over Tatiana Makarova and Macarena Olivares at No. 2.
The point came down to the No. 3 line where A&M's Riley McQuaid and Iulia Ivascu won a crucial no-ad point to take a 6-5 lead over Jacqueline Pelletier and Luca Fabian. The Aggie duo then got a service break to close out a 7-5 win to clinch the point.
Olivares gave A&M a 2-0 lead at the start of singles. Listed 93rd in the ITA national singles rankings, the senior disposed of Hinton, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 line. Alabama, however, would win the next two singles matches to be completed to tie the score, 2-2, as Kylie Moulin downed Dorthea Faa-Hviding, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6, and Daniell, ranked No. 104 in singles, topped Gonzalez, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at No. 1.
A&M regained the lead, 3-2, as Paalma won four consecutive games in the opening set and won back-to-back games in the second set to close out a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Pelletier at No. 3.
Selim knotted the score at 3-3 with a straight-set win at No. 4. Selim held off McQuaid, 7-5 in the first set and then roared back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to win 7-5.
The match came down to the No. 5 line. Makarova had won the first set, 6-1, and Cortina-Pou pulled away for a 7-5 second-set win to force a third set. The final set was tied at 3-3 when Selim's win over McQuaid sent all attention to Court 5. Makarova won back-to-back no-ad points to build a 5-3 lead, but Cortina-Pou would rally to win the next four games to close out the 7-5 win and clinch the victory for the Tide.
