No. 9 Texas A&M’s Comeback Bid Falls Short
Apr 21, 2018 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – The ninth-ranked Texas A&M softball team mounted a rally in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies fell to No. 15 LSU, 3-2, Saturday night at Tiger Park.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the seventh, Kaitlyn Alderink started the rally with an infield single and moved to second on a single through the left side from Riley Sartain. Kelbi Fortenberry kept the comeback alive with a RBI single to left, plating Alderink. A close play at the plate allowed the runners to advance to second and third as Kylie George, who pinch ran for Sartain, later touched home on a LSU fielding error.
The Aggies (36-12, 9-8 SEC) chased LSU starter Allie Walljasper out of the game, but Carley Hoover earned her first save of the season, shutting down the Texas A&M offense by inducing a double play and a lineout.
Offensively, the Aggies were led by Alderink and Tori Vidales, who each recorded two hits. LSU's (35-10, 9-7 SEC) Amanda Doyle went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI, while Amber Serrett and Sydney Springfield each added a RBI.
Samantha Show was saddled with the loss, giving up three runs in 4.1 innings while striking out three. Kayla Poynter tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and fanned one.
Walljasper earned her 13th win of the season, allowing six hits in six innings with five strikeouts.
