COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women's tennis team faces No. 28 Kentucky in a crucial Southeastern Conference match on Saturday in Lexington. First serve is at 11 a.m. (12 p.m. ET) at the Boone Tennis Complex indoor courts, with both teams looking to improve their seeding in the upcoming SEC Tournament.
Both teams are tied for seventh in the SEC with 5-5 records in conference contests. A&M, 15-6 overall, is looking to get back into the win column after suffering back-to-back losses to top 10-ranked teams, including a 4-0 loss at No. 2 Vanderbilt on Thursday. Kentucky, 13-7 overall and 9-3 in home matches, is coming off a 4-1 home victory against LSU on Thursday.
"The Kentucky match will take upon a whole different feel as we will be playing indoors on a fast surface," A&M coach Mark Weaver said. "The Vanderbilt courts are a bit slow and outdoors, so making an adjustment to the contrast of the conditions will be as an important of a factor as any tomorrow."
Individually, A&M is led by reigning SEC Player of the Week Macarena Olivares, who is a career-high No. 77 in the ITA singles rankings, released on Tuesday. The senior from Santiago, Chile, recorded the third ranked victory of her two-year career on Sunday, having defeated 90th-ranked Sabina Machalova of then-No. 10 Ole Miss. Most recently, she was locked in a battle with third-ranked Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt, having narrowly dropped the first set, 7-5, but holding a 4-0 second-set lead when play was stopped. Olivares is riding a team-leading four match win streak which includes two wins against ranked opponents. She is a team-best 25-9 overall and 15-4 in dual matches. In addition, Olivares leads the team in SEC wins with a 5-3 record, all at the No. 2 line.
A&M senior Domenica Gonzalez is No. 125 in singles with a 14-2 dual match record, all at the No. 1 line. She and partner Eva Paalma catapulted into the doubles rankings this week and are No. 52 following a season-best 6-4 victory over then-No. 7 Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles of Ole Miss on Sunday. Most recently, they were up, 4-3, and on serve against Vanderbilt's Emma Kurtz and Emily Smith when the doubles point was clinch and the match was stopped.
Kentucky will be playing its final home match of the season and will honor seniors Mami Adachi and Emily Fanning prior to the match. Adachi leads the Wildcats with a 13-1 record in dual matches, including a perfect 5-0 record in SEC matches. In doubles, Adachi and Fanning form the 42nd ranked duo in the nation.
Kentucky owns an 11-5 lead in the all-time series against the Aggies, including a 5-1 record in matches played in Lexington. A&M, however, is 4-1 against the Wildcats since joining the SEC in 2013. A&M won the most recent meeting, upsetting the 11th-ranked Wildcats, 4-2, last year in the Aggies' final SEC home match of the season.
The Aggies close out the regular season with a pair of road matches next week, playing at No. 17 Auburn on April 13 and at Alabama on April 15. The SEC Tournament is April 18-22 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
