Texas A&M’s Late Rally Falls Short in 4-1 Loss at Kentucky
Apr 07, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ken.—Texas A&M rallied late but was unable to complete a comeback, falling to No. 28 Kentucky, 4-1, today at the Boone Tennis Complex four-court indoor facility.
Both teams entered the match tied for seventh in the Southeastern Conference with 5-5 records and vying to improve their seeding in the upcoming SEC Tournament later this month. Kentucky, which was celebrating its Senior Day, improves to 14-7 overall, including 10-3 in home matches. A&M falls to 15-7.
"Kentucky is one of the hardest places to play in with the four very fast indoor courts," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We got down, 3-0, rather quickly, but we really fought very hard and almost mounted a great comeback. With any sort of luck, Domenica Gonzalez had the third set, and it really looked like we were going to win the Nos. 5 and 6 matches."
The Wildcats took the early lead by winning the first two doubles matches to be completed. Justina Mikulskyte and Mami Adachi were first off, winning their first five games on the way to a 6-1 victory over A&M's Tatiana Makarova and Riley McQuaid at the No. 2 line.
Emily Fanning and Lesedi Jacobs then pulled away for a 6-3 victory at No. 1 against A&M's 52nd-ranked duo of Eva Paalma and Gonzalez to clinch the doubles point for Kentucky. A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Macarena Olivares had just regained a 4-3 lead against Kentucky's Brianna Tulloch and Diana Tkachenko at the No. 3 line when play was stopped.
The Wildcats began singles action by winning the first set on three of the four available courts. Mikulskyte, ranked No. 112, gave Kentucky a 2-0 lead after defeating 77th-ranked and reigning SEC Player of the Week Macarena Olivares, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 line. The loss snapped Olivares' team-leading four-match win streak.
Adachi, a senior playing her final home match, then put Kentucky ahead, 3-0, and improved to 6-0 in SEC matches with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Paalma at No. 2, but the Aggies were battling on the other courts.
McQuaid was the only A&M player in the Nos. 1-4 lines to win the opening set, holding off Tkachenko, 6-4, at No. 4. Tkachenko, however, pulled away for a 6-3 second-set win to force a third set. Meanwhile, Gonzalez rallied to force a third set against Fanning at No. 1. Fanning had won the first set, 6-2, but Gonzalez pulled out a 7-5 second-set win.
The momentum was shifting towards A&M as Makarova and Faa-Hviding got off to quick starts at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, and McQuaid had jumped out to a 4-1 lead in her third set against Tkachenko. McQuaid then put the Aggies on the scoreboard and within 3-1 with a 6-3 third-set victory.
Gonzalez had gone up, 4-3, against Fanning in the third set, and Makarova had won her first set, 6-3, and was building a 5-3 lead in the second set against Jacobs at No. 5. In addition, Faa-Hviding was on her way to a 6-2 first-set win against Tulloch at No. 6, but Fanning won three consecutive games to win the third set against Gonzalez, 6-4, clinching the victory for Kentucky and dashing the Aggies' comeback hopes.
The Aggies close out the regular season next week with a pair of road matches, playing at No. 17 Auburn on April 13 and at Alabama on April 15. The SEC Tournament is April 18-22 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
