Texas A&M falls to No. 6 Texas in NCAA second round
May 12, 2018 | Women's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas ---The Texas A&M women's tennis team's 2017-18 season ended with a 4-0 loss to No. 6 Texas in NCAA second-round action on Saturday at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Aggies finished the year with a 17-11 record, while the Longhorns improved to 24-4 and earned a spot at the NCAA Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
"Texas is a very fine team," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "If you're going to beat a team like Texas on their home court in the NCAA tournament, you have to play at a very high level at all the courts. Unfortunately, we weren't able to play at that level and Texas played very well. They were just a little too much for us today."
A trio of Texas A&M seniors – Domenica Gonzalez, Macarena Olivares and Eva Paalma – played their final matches in the Maroon and White on Saturday.
"Our seniors did a great job for us all season long," Weaver said. "They meant so much to the team, on and off the court. They are tremendous leaders by example and I'm extremely proud of what they accomplished at Texas A&M."
The Longhorns started quickly by winning the doubles points with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Texas A&M's Paalma and Gonzalez fell 6-3 at No. 1 to No. 55 Petra Granic/Bojana Markovic, and freshman Tatiana Makarova and Olivares dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 2 to Marta Perez-Mur/Dani Wagland.
Once in singles, the Big 12 Champion Longhorns won the first set on five of six courts and went on tally wins at the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 courts. No. 64 Petra Granic defeated Paalma, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3; Perez-Mur downed Makarova, 6-3, 6-3; and Wagland beat freshman Iulia Ivascu, 6-2, 6-3.
