Match Day Preview: BYU
Aug 23, 2018 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies make their 2018 Ellis Field debut Friday evening when they host the BYU Cougars for the annual Fish Camp Game. Game time for the contest is set for 7:30 p.m. Annually, the Fish Camp Game is one of the most highly attended women's soccer matches in the nation.
The Aggies look to start 3-0-0 for the ninth time in program history and the third time in the last five seasons. Texas A&M is riding high after claiming the title at the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff, beating host Hawai'i and Loyola Marymount by a combined tally of 7-0. The Maroon & White boast a school-record 17-match unbeaten streak with their last loss coming at Auburn (0-1) on September 15, 2017.
The match features two of college soccer's winningest coaches. Both coaches enter the fray with a .748 winning percentage with Jennifer Rockwood's .74805 (363-108-43) ranking sixth among active Division I coaches and G Guerrieri's .74756 (443-138-35) ranking seventh.
This marks the second consecutive season A&M started the year with consecutive shutouts. The Aggies have opened the season with back-to-back shutouts a total of six times, including 1999, 2005, '06, '07, '17 and '18. The last two years are the only time both matches were on the road. On Friday, the Aggies look to string together three shutouts to start the season to match the school-best set in 2006 when they opened with a double-overtime victory against North Carolina (1-0) and followed it up with triumphs against UTSA (7-0) and Illinois (3-0).
Texas A&M is one of 27 teams to make it through the first two games of their season without yielding a goal. Of the 27 teams to start the season with two shutouts, the Aggies are one of just eight teams to notch 7 or more goals. Mercer has outscored opponents 12-0 in their first two games, followed by Ole Miss and Hartford at 10-0, Memphis at 8-0 and Lamar, North Dakota, Penn State and Texas A&M at 7-0.
Since 1993, Texas A&M is 21-3-1 all-time in home openers. Eighteen of the Aggies' 24 home openers also doubled as season openers with A&M posting a 15-3 mark in those games. The prior seven years the Aggies did not begin the season at home were 1993, '94, '96, 2001, '12, '15, '17 and '18.
This marks the Aggies first-ever meeting against Brigham Young on the soccer pitch.
BYU is coming off a 7-8-4 campaign, their first losing season since 2004. After last year's fourth-place finish, the Cougars were picked third in the WCC Preseason Poll.
Brigham Young got a penalty kick from Madie Siddoway Gates in the 97th minute to topple Cal State Fullerton in the opener. In the second game of the season, BYU erased a 2-0 deficit at Nebraska to pull out a 2-2 draw. Lizzy Braby and Preseason All-WCC Mikayla Colohan scored goals in the tie.
Video streaming for the match is available worldwide on SEC Network+ with David Ellis (play-by-play) and Jeff Givens (color analyst). The match may be heard on The Zone 102.7 and RadioAggieland.com. Live stats are available on tamustats.com.
