Texas A&M’s Park Breaks School Scoring Record At Schooner Fall Classic
Sep 30, 2018 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla.—Texas A&M sophomore Amber Park set the school 54-hole scoring record, shooting an 11-under 202 to lead the women's golf team at the Schooner Fall Classic.
Park finished a career-best third behind Alabama's Jiwon Jeon (-17) and Lauren Stephenson (-14), both of whom rank in the top 10 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Park, who shot in the 60s each round at Belmar Golf Club, had a final-round 2-under 69. She breaks the school's 54-hole record, which stood at 10-under par by Ashley Knoll (2005 Lady Tar Heel Invitational) and former teammate Maddie Szeryk (2017 Jim West Challenge).
"I was able to stay in the moment, and take my game one hole at a time," Park said. "I had a slow start today, with putts not really dropping like the previous two days. Coach Gaston gave me a few words of encouragement that helped turn around my game, and I started attacking more pins. It was a lot of fun out there."
The Aggies shot a 2-under 282 Sunday on the par 71 / 6,048-yard course, with four players coming in at par-or-better. Texas A&M had its best 54-hole score since the 2015 San Antonio Regional, posting an 8-under 844 to finish sixth. Alabama won the event with an NCAA Record 45-under par.
"It was great to see consistent effort throughout the tournament," head coach Andrea Gaston said. "We had steady and consistent performance all three days. I'm very happy to see Amber's highest finish as an Aggie, as she put up some incredible scores all three days against a very competitive field. I am proud of the way the freshmen played, and am excited to build on our momentum headed to our next event."
The two Texas A&M freshmen—Brooke Tyree and Katie Finley, each carded an even-par 71 on Sunday. Tyree finished the tournament with an even-par 213, tying for 32nd place. Finley, playing in her first collegiate tournament, checked in at 2-over 215, ranking in a tie for 38th. Finley birdied four of the first eight holes at Belmar Golf Club Sunday.
"I did a good job of staying level-headed and not getting ahead of myself today," Tyree said. "I'm not hitting the ball that well right now, so I had to rely on my short game to keep me in it."
"It was a great first tournament to play in," Finley added. "I'm excited to keep going this season and see what our team can accomplish."
Courtney Dow checked in with the first par-or-better round of the young season, and the 21st of her career, with an even-par 71. She finished tied for 56th at 8-over 221. Ava Schwienteck carded a 3-over 74 in the final round—battling back from a first-round 83 to shoot even par over the last two rounds, and finish tied for 68th.
"This week really showed our potential, and what we can do together as a team," Schwienteck said. "This tournament is just the beginning and it's going to be exciting to see what the rest of the season brings."
The Aggies return to the course October 19-21 at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin.
