TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 24 Texas A&M men's tennis team travels to No. 20 Alabama for a noon matchup at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
"We are playing a veteran team that we played in the Round of 16 last season in the NCAA's," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "They are solid throughout their singles and doubles lineup. Doubles will be important as we hope to get off to a fast start. I think playing indoors comes down to how well you serve as well as being really solid on the returns in faster conditions. Tomorrow should be a really fun match and a good barometer on how much we have improved so far this season."
The Maroon & White return to the courts after sweeping Auburn on Friday to improve to 7-3 this season and 1-0 in SEC play. After picking up the doubles point, the Maroon & White won all six singles matches in straight sets. The Crimson Tide stand at 11-2 this spring and 1-0 in the league after defeating LSU 5-2 on Friday night.
On the heels of his stellar play last week against Tulsa and Arizona State, A&M sophomore Barnaby Smith earned SEC Player of the Week honors. Smith earned a pair of crucial singles victories and the Aggie's first ranked doubles victory of the spring. Additionally, the High Wycombe, England native, captured an impressive three-set victory over the Sun Devils' Justin Roberts, ranked No. 97 nationally.
Texas A&M boasts four student-athletes in this week's Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Top 125 National Singles Rankings. Junior Valentin Vacherot re-entered the rankings at No. 47 this week to lead the charge for the Maroon & White. Joining Vacherot in the Top 125 are No. 66 Smith, No. 105 Austin Abbrat and No. 121 Carlos Aguilar.
Smith is a perfect 7-0 this spring and is riding a eight match win streak. Abbrat, a freshman from Spring, Texas, has won seven of his last eight matches. Aguilar, from La Paz, Bolivia, has earned five wins on the top two courts this spring.
The Aggies lead the all-time series against the Crimson Tide, 14-0, after winning a pair of matches against Alabama last season. The Maroon & White posted a 5-2 win in the regular season matchup before sweeping the Round of 16 matchup in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Following the trip to the Yellowhammer state the Aggies return to the Mitchell Tennis Center for the first time in league play on Thursday, March 7 against Georgia.
