Mar 29, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CHICAGO- No. 14 and fourth-seeded Texas A&M faces No. 3 and top-seeded Notre Dame in the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year. Tip is set for 3 p.m. inside Wintrust Arena.
The game is broadcast on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins, Debbie Antonelli and Courtney Lyle on the call. Every game of the Championship is available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). Radio listeners can hear Tom Turbiville and Steve Miller on the Texas A&M Sports Network, broadcast locally in Bryan-College Station on WTAW 1620 AM.
The Aggies (26-7) are making their eighth Sweet 16 appearance, and are looking to reach the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 2014.
"I'm excited to have that opportunity," said head coach Gary Blair. "We've been productive this year, and we've overcome adversity as well as any team I've ever coached."
Texas A&M advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year with a 78-76 win over fifth-seeded Marquette. Shambria Washington hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 22.9 seconds in a game that neither team led by more than three points in the fourth quarter. Chennedy Carter led the Aggies with 30 points in the game.
As defending National Champions, Notre Dame (32-3) enters the Sweet 16 after blowout wins against No. 16-seed Bethune-Cookman and No. 9-seed Michigan State. Last season, the Fighting Irish held on to a 90-84 win over the Aggies in the Spokane Regional Semifinal. Carter led A&M with 31 points in the game, while Notre Dame receive 27 points from Arike Ogunbowale and 25 from Marina Mabrey.
"I know when we play Notre Dame, we'll face a lot of adversity," said Carter. "There will be runs. They'll go up, we'll go up. It'll probably come down to the last minute of the game. You have to have grit, determination and push-through."
Prior to last season's game, the teams had met once previously in the NCAA Tournament, with Texas A&M winning the 2011 National Championship with a 76-70 win over Notre Dame in the National Final.
The winner of this game advances to the NCAA Chicago Regional Final, facing the winner between No. 2-seed Stanford and No. 11-seed Missouri State on April 1 at 8 p.m.
