Mar 17, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Texas A&M women's tennis team returns from a nearly two week hiatus as they travel to take on Kentucky (11-3, 3-3) and No. 14 Vanderbilt (12-2, 4-2). The Aggies (10-3, 2-1) are scheduled to take on the Wildcats at the Boone Tennis Complex on Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT) before traveling to Nashville to challenge the Commodores at 12 p.m. (CT) at the Currey Tennis Center
"We are excited to get back in action after being out of competition for a bit," head coach Mark Weaver said. "Kentucky and Vanderbilt are both having very good seasons so far. We will have to ready to perform at a high level and compete for every point at every position in the singles and the doubles."
The latest rendition of the Oracle ITA Rankings saw the Maroon & White slide three places, coming in at the No. 25 slot. Currently, seven Southeastern Conference teams have cracked the poll, with Georgia leading the way at the No. 3 position. A&M has found itself among the ranks of the national elite in five consecutive weeks.
In their last action, Texas A&M posted a 4-0 triumph over Mississippi State on March 5 at the Mitchell Tennis Center. After claiming the doubles point to open the match, the Maroon & White picked up wins from No. 64 Tatiana Makarova, Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Renee McBryde.
Faa-Hviding leads the Maroon & White with dual match singles wins, boasting an unblemished 9-0 record. The Stavanger, Norway, native is 10-1 overall. Makarova continues to pace all Texas A&M student-athletes with a 16-5 overall singles record. The Moscow, Russia, native is 8-3 in dual matches with a 5-3 record at the No. 1 line.
McBryde recorded the clinch victory on Friday night against the Bulldogs. The Wollongong, Australia, native has logged three clinch wins this season with the prior two coming against Washington State (Jan. 24) and South Carolina (Feb. 26). McBryde now holds a 9-3 overall singles record with a 6-2 mark in dual match play.
Kentucky enters Thursday's match off a 4-3 defeat to Vanderbilt in Nashville. The Wildcats claimed the doubles point, but Vanderbilt was able to pull off four singles wins to secure the team victory.
