Jan 28, 2022 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 13 Texas A&M women's tennis lays its unbeaten streak on the line this weekend, as the Aggies welcome Princeton, South Carolina and Texas Tech to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center as a part of ITA Kickoff Weekend. A&M squares off against Princeton on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will take on either South Carolina or Texas Tech on Sunday, also at 11 a.m.
HEAD COACH MARK WEAVER SAID…
"We are extremely excited to be hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend here in Aggieland with an excellent opportunity to advance to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships next month. We have a very challenging bracket, which our team is thrilled to compete against. Our squad is off to a very good start this season and I fully expect our players to come out ready to go tomorrow against a very talented and experienced Princeton team."
FIRST SERVE
Since the seven-point scoring era began prior to the 2001 dual match season, the 2022 Aggies are the only Texas A&M team to hold six consecutive opponents scoreless. The Aggies boast a 6-0 overall record with all six wins coming in sweeping fashion, marking the first time the Maroon & White have booked six consecutive 7-0 results in program annals. In A&M's most recent outing, the Aggies toppled the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and Prairie View A&M Panthers. The Aggies remain two wins shy of tying the best start by record in program history: an 8-0 opening run in the 2019 season.
IN THE RANKINGS
In the most recent ITA Division I Women's Team Rankings released Wednesday; the Aggies stayed put at No. 13. The Maroon & White remain the second-highest ranked team in the Southeastern Conference behind the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs and trail only the No. 1 Texas Longhorns for the top spot in the Lone Star State. In the individual rankings, the doubles tandem of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova remain the No. 5 team in the nation, while Makarova stands at No. 122 in the singles poll.
#LOCKEDIN ON ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND
Every year since 2009, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has hosted a 60-team tournament to open dual match team play, aptly named the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Some of the best programs in women's college tennis will compete in the 14th installment of the tournament, which features 15 host institutions in separate regional brackets. Winners of each regional advance to the 2022 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. Texas A&M is one of only seven universities in the nation hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend in both the men's and women's brackets, with the Aggie men's team welcoming Arizona, Texas Tech and UCLA.
Princeton is off to an 0-4 start in the 2022 dual match season, dropping all four matches to nationally ranked opponents. SEC-rival South Carolina arrives in Aggieland following a 5-2 loss to then-No. 18 Oklahoma on the road. Finally, in-state foe Texas Tech heads to the Brazos Valley boasting a 2-0 dual match record, with wins over UTEP and Abilene Christian on opening day.
Each of A&M's three visitors feature a trio of nationally ranked singles athletes, with Princeton's Daria Frayman (No. 4), Victoria Hu (No. 23) and Brianna Shvets (No. 60) squaring off with the top half of Texas A&M's lineup on Saturday. South Carolina's Sarah Hamner (No. 2), Ayana Akli (No. 28) and Megan Davies (No. 118) prepare to take on Texas Tech's trio of Margarita Skriabina (No. 46), Avelina Sayfetdinova (No. 47) and Kailey Evans (No. 89).
