No. 9 A&M Top Northwestern in Opening Round of ITA Kickoff, 4-0

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 9 Texas A&M women's tennis team came one step closer to punching its ticket to the ITA National Indoors, with a win over Northwestern (4-0), Saturday. The win marked A&M's 44th consecutive victory at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
It was a battle from the beginning between the Aggies and Wildcats, with each court going point-for-point. On court 1, No. 3 Mia Kupres/Mary Stoiana took down No. 39 Christina Hand/Justine Leong (6-4) to put the pressure on Northwestern. The Wildcats answered back, taking court 3 to a tiebreak (7-6(4)). On court 2, Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez outlasted Sydney Pratt/Elisa Van Meeteren (7-6(7)) in a thriller tiebreak to clinch the doubles point.
Heading into singles with the advantage, No. 1 Stoiana quickly doubled A&M's lead with a victory over Maria Shusharina (6-1, 6-1). Across the way, No. 31 Khirin defeated Justine Leong (6-1, 7-5) to improve the Aggie lead. Securing the sweep, Daria Smetannikov topped Kiley Rabjohns (7-5, 6-3) on court 5.
