SEATTLE – The No. 9 Texas A&M women's tennis team fell to No. 7 Georgia, 4-2, in a hard-fought battle at the ITA National Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon.
Georgia was the early aggressor, as the Bulldogs stole both courts 2 and 3 to gain the advantage heading into singles. No. 3 Mia Kupres/Mary Stoiana were tied 4-4 with No. 31 Aysegul Mert/Dasha Vidmanova before Georgia took the lead.
From the beginning, the Aggies and Bulldogs were trading points to open the first set. Georgia doubled the lead with a win on court 5. The Maroon & White answered back with one of their own on court 3, with No. 24 Kupres downing No. 66 Mell Reasco (6-3, 6-2). Georgia increased it's lead to 3-1 after taking court 6, however No. 32 Nicole Khirin kept the Aggies alive with her third ranked victory on the weekend over No. 48 Alexandra Vecic (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). The last two courts battled to a third set, each going point-for- point, but Georgia ultimately stole the match on court 4 despite the battle, 4-2.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver on today's match …
"That was a nail biter and a very high-level tennis match. We are playing good tennis and every match we have played has come down to the wire and not in our favor. We have to find ways to get across the finish line and I know our group will figure it out."
